Wm. Mulherin's

Restaurant by Stokes Architecture in Philadelphia, PA

WM. Mulherin’s Sons is the first restaurant from Method Hospitality. The wildly popular “urban Italian” restaurant from executive chef Chris Painter, got its namesake from its location, an abandoned distillery in Fishtown. The existing space was a beautiful mix of raw and previously finished/somehow preserved materials when Stokes first visited the site. Using the existing bones as a starting point, the design set out to celebrate what was there, and make a warm space that feels instantly classic and modern simultaneously, avoiding a disingenuous “period” vibe.

The existing wood details were restored and refinished, but punctuated with a modern/folk mural by artist Stacey Rozich. An existing vault was repurposed, using the steel safe door for a coat closet door. The language of that door was also recreated, with a modern tilt, in a custom surround for a wood-fire pizza oven. A new marble mosaic tile floor bears the original distillery’s slogan, celebrating the history of the building.
