John Woodsum Hatch
1919-1998
During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved.
Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH.
Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist.
Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78.

Still life in a semi-cubist style by Irene Pattinson (American, 1909-1999). On a reddish-purple table, there is a plate with two apples, a bottle of wine, and an acoustic guitar. The guitar's headstock is shown extending from where the neck meets the body, implying a cubist interpretation of the scene. The proposed painting is a work by the Neapolitan painter Giacomo Nani (Porto Ercole 1698 - Naples 1770) and delights us with a selection of his favourite elements in the creation of his precious still lifes; On a stone shelf, on which an embroidered carpet is laid, we see a series of objects, including two painted porcelain cups, a riser with two liqueur bottles and crystal goblets; then there is a transparent glass vase filled with flowers, and finally some foodstuffs, a basket with biscuits, a wrapped Neapolitan aubergine and an icebox with an oyster.
Everything is arranged to create a refined and elegant ensemble.
A pupil of Gaspare Lopez (Naples - Venice ca. 1732), one of the leading generalists of the time, Giacomo Nani developed an autonomous personality over time, much appreciated by 18th century nobles and collectors, including the Duchess of Terranova and the Duke of Limatola, as well as the Bourbons.
Numerous in particular were his paintings owned by King Charles of Bourbon, which are now preserved in Naples and Caserta at the picture gallery of the Royal Estate of Carditello.
Twenty-four canvases by Giacomo Nani were sent to Spain by Charles of Bourbon as gifts for his mother, Elisabeth Farnese, and are today kept at the Royal Palace of Riofrío, one of the residences of the Spanish royal family, and at the Royal Palace of the Granja de San Ildefonso, in Segovia.
A painter of still lifes, his works were often devoted to a wide variety of foodstuffs. In his compositions, foodstuffs of the period appear and, in particular, in the series conserved in Spain, most of the dishes that were served on the tables of the Neapolitans in those years are depicted as in a select menu.

Born on a farm in Polk County, Nebraska, during the famous blizzard of 1888, Augustus Dunbier became Nebraska's most prominent and widely traveled artist in the early to mid 20th century. Working until the year before his death at age 89, he painted landscapes, still life, and portraits in a style that others, but not he, labelled Impressionist. Georges Paul Masure was a Parisian painter in the Montparnasse area. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in the years 1900/1910.
Our painting is the painting he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 under the number 2032 and titled "Flowers and Japaneries". It represents a still life with a bunch of flowers, a magnificent basket of oranges, a pomegranate and a Japanese sculpture with a little fisherman with a red Koi carp. 2500 years ago, when the son of Confucius was born, he received as a gift from King Shoko of Ro, a fish that was first called Koi. It represents the symbol of strength, because this fish was the only one able to go up the steam of the Yellow River. Owning a koi will long remain the prerogative of the Japanese nobility.
