Eclispe Target, 2009
Liz Markus\'s series of \"Failed Targets\" are paintings that pay direct homage to her artistic idol, Kenneth Noland. She has recreated several of his iconic targets, knowing that using their shared unpredictable technique of acrylic on unprimed canvas, she could never true copy the piece. Though she has a remarkable degree of control, Markus also surrenders to chance as she pushes and pulls the paint with both brushes and gravity. Instead, her paintings become distinctly her own. Though she chooses to work on rectangular canvas, she draws a pencil line to make a conceptual square -- Noland preferred shape of canvas.
