The devil holding the phone is taking a selfie with a Kozak he had led astray. The Kozak, beguiled by the woman reflected in the bottle of horilka (moonshine), is unaware that this encounter was orchestrated by the devil. In the foreground and background of the painting are various Ukrainian dishes and delicacies. They are the most realistic elements of the painting, suggesting that the painter wants to share his love for this food with the viewer. A new major installation has been created for her exhibition at ODETTA that layers baroque design elements found in paper cup carrying trays with anxiety-provoking phrases, rendered as gorgeous, yet fragile paper spheres. This collapsible, frantic universe parallels the global climate created by our current administration.
Nancy Baker is compelled to put things together; underscoring the process of combining and interlocking forms in elegant configurations, she interweaves mathematical data in her constructions that speak to her need for stasis and a reliable reality. The recently new experience of living once again in an urban environment has made her sensitized to the dominating forces of infrastructure, and to those corresponding interstitial spaces that, arouse wonder and anxiety. The competition for space and sky has been instructive; her work reflects this struggle by recreating the battlefield in the studio, and attempting to tame it, and ultimately, to own it.
For the exhibit, No Regrets, Baker seizes upon current political anxiety that informs her series of works which employ text from the US Constitution, in addition to mathematical constructs such as Pi, and the Golden Section...

Navigation by artist Lisa Weiss is a contemporary abstract blue, turquoise, grey, and yellow mixed media on panel that measures 30 x 20 and is priced at $1,500.
Lisa Weiss’ work is about mark making, patterning, spontaneous movement, momentary awareness and paring down to essentials. She is continually looking for ways to detach from the past and future with a focus on the here and now. Weiss’ paintings are process driven by movement, repetition, materials, and place. Her works are for beauty and contemplation.
A professional artist from Tennessee, Lisa Weiss received her BFA
in painting and sculpture from Middle Tennessee State University
in 1990. She received a teaching assistantship to Louisiana State
University in Painting and Drawing and completed her MFA in 1996.
Lisa has exhibited her work nationally in solo and group shows for the past
fifteen years. She is included in numerous public and private collections
throughout America, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Holland.
She has the honor of being in the Hunter Museum permanent collection.
In the last seven years, Lisa has attended four artist residencies:
Dorland Colony in California, Millay Colony in New York,
Wurlitzer Foundation in New Mexico and the Nantucket School of Art
on Nantucket Island.
She has taught design, painting and drawing at the University of
Southern Mississippi, Watkins College of Art and Film, Eastern New Mexico
University and Winthrop University.
Lisa has recently earned initial certification for teaching yoga from
Yandara Yoga Institute in Todos Santos, Mexico. She has traveled
the United States, Mexico and Europe. Lisa currently creates artwork
in her studio in Franklin, Tennessee.
