Finding the Right rugs-carpets for You

Good antique rugs and vintage rugs have made their way into homes across the globe, becoming fixtures used for comfort, prayer and self-expression, so choosing the right area rug is officially a universal endeavor.

In modern usage, “carpet” typically denotes a wall-to-wall floor cushioning that is fixed to the floor. Rugs, on the other hand, are designed to cover a specific area and can easily be moved to new locations. However, the terms are interchangeable in many parts of the world, and, in the end, it won’t matter what you decide to call it.

It’s well known that a timeless Persian rug or vintage Turkish rug can warm any interior, but there are lots of other styles of antique rugs to choose from when you're endeavoring to introduce fresh colors and textures to a bedroom or living room.

Moroccan Berber rugs are not all about pattern. In fact, some of the most striking examples are nearly monochrome. But what these rugs lack in complexity, they make up for in brilliant color and subtle variation. Moroccan-style interiors can be mesmerizing — a sitting room of this type might feature a Moroccan rug, carved wooden screens and a tapestry hung behind the sofa.

Handwoven kilim rugs, known for their wealth of rich colors and unique weaving tradition, are pileless: Whereas the Beni Ourain rugs of Morocco can be described as dense with a thick surface or pile, an authentic kilim rug is thin and flat. (The term “kilim” is Turkish in origin, but this type of textile artistry is practiced all across the Balkans, throughout the Arab world and elsewhere.)

When it comes to eye-catching floor coverings, the distinctive “medallion” pattern of Oushak rugs has two types of rounded shapes alternating against a rich red or blue background created with natural dyes, while the elaborate “star” pattern involves large eight-pointed shapes in diagonal rows alternating with diamonds.

If you’re looking for something unexpected, find a runner rug that pops in your hallway or on your stairs. Dig for dazzling geometric patterns in our inventory of mid-century modern rugs and carpets, which includes works designed by the likes of Swedish textile masters Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Marianne Richter and other artisans.

Carpets and rugs have been around for thousands of years. Prehistoric humans turned to animal skin, wool and fur to craft simple fabrics to soften hard terrain. A 2016 study suggests that "cave lions" were hunted for exactly this purpose, and that decorating your cave with their pelts may have conferred strength and prestige. Although many of these early textiles are still in existence, tracing their precise origins is difficult. Carpets quickly became such a valuable trade commodity that the weavings could easily travel far from their places of origin.

The oldest known carpet was found in southern Siberia. (It may have traveled there from Persepolis in Iran.) For the flat-weave floor rugs crafted by Native Americans, cotton was the primary material before sheep’s wool was introduced in the 16th century. In Europe, carpet-making was fundamental to folk art, and Asian carpets imported to European countries were at one time considered a precious luxury and not intended to remain permanently on the floor.

With the variety of area rugs and carpets rolled out for you on 1stDibs — a collection that includes traditional, modern, minimalist rugs and other coverings of all kinds — things will be looking up whenever you’re looking down.

  • Nazmiyal
    NazmiyalMarch 23, 2021
That depends on what the rug is, how old it is, how large and how fine.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The best way to tell if your Persian rug is real silk is to simply rub the fabric. Silk will get warmer if you rub it, and likely develop a sheen. If neither happens and if the rug feels coarse, then it’s likely not real silk. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of genuine Persian rugs from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Silk Persian rugs can be worth upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. Persian silk rugs are so expensive because they are hand-woven and can take decades to create. While all silk Persian rugs are worth quite a bit of money, antique silk Persion rugs can fetch even higher prices.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Silk robes are robes made from silk, a natural fiber that comes from the cocoons of silkworms. Silk robes have been used for centuries and fashion designers continue to reimagine this timeless garment. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of vintage and contemporary silk robes from brands like Christian Dior and Casablanca along with antique one-of-a-kind pieces.

Silk crepe is a distinct fabric that has a particular wrinkled and bumpy appearance. It is often thin and lightweight, hence the name “crepe” referring to the french thin pancakes.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
What silk painting is called depends on the origins of the artwork. In Tibet, silk paintings made for religious rituals are thangka, while in Vietnam, the traditional art form is known as tranh lụa. On 1stDibs, shop a range of silk paintings.

Yes, authentic Japanese kimonos are made of silk. Mulberry silk, which comes from the mulberry silkworm and accounts for around 90 percent of the world’s silk, is the most popular type used to make kimonos. Shop a selection of authentic silk kimonos on 1stDibs.

Chinese silk embroidery is an art form that involves stitching highly detailed traditional images onto silk fabric by hand. The Chinese name for the art form is xiuhua or zhahua. On 1stDibs, you can shop a selection of Chinese silk embroidery.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023
The symbolism of a silk dress is really a matter of individual interpretation. Some people associate silk dresses with wealth and status because silk is a luxury material, while others merely appreciate its enveloping texture and link it with softness and sensuality. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of silk dresses from some of the world’s top boutiques.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
Silk chiffon fabric is a sheer and elegant cloth that drapes well for dresses. It is a material well suited for evening dresses and formal wear.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Hermès silk needs to be hand washed with water, as silk doesn’t react well with chemicals. Invest in specialized silk cleaner products if you plan to wash Hermès silk at home. Follow the care instructions and consult an expert if you’re unsure. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Hermès silk clothing from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Organza is a sheer material originally made from silk, though it is now more commonly made from synthetic fibers. The fabric is very delicate, though synthetic fibers are more durable than silk.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To tell if a kimono is made from silk, look for silk’s signature pearlescence, sheen and luster. Run your fingers over the fabric — it should feel smooth. Hold the kimono up from a single point at the neck. The fabric and it should drape luxuriously. If the fabric has a flat sheen, feels rough, or doesn’t drape well, it’s probably not real silk. Shop a collection of authentic silk kimonos from top sellers on 1stDibs.
