Finding the Right Rings for You
Antique and vintage rings have long held a special place in the hearts of fine jewelry lovers all over the world.
No matter their origin or specific characteristics, rings are timeless, versatile accessories. They’ve carried deep meaning since at least the Middle Ages, when diamond rings symbolized strength and other kinds of rings were worn to signify romantic feelings or to denote an affiliation with a religious order. Rings have also forever been emblematic of eternity.
Over time, rings have frequently taken the form of serpents, which have long been associated with eternal life, health and renewal. Italian luxury jewelry house Bulgari has become famous for its widely loved Serpenti motif, for example, and its Serpenti ring, like the other accessories in the collection, began as an homage to jewelry of the Roman and Hellenistic eras. The serpent is now a popular motif in fine jewelry. Jewelry devotees have long pined for rings adorned with reptiles, thanks to antique Victorian rings — well, specifically, Queen Victoria’s illustrious engagement ring, which took the form of a gold snake set with rubies, diamonds and an emerald (her birthstone). Designs for Victorian-era engagement rings often featured repoussé work and chasing, in which patterns are hammered into the metal.
Engagement rings, which are reliably intimidating to shop for, are still widely recognized as symbols of love and commitment. On 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement rings, vintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings.
The most collectible antique engagement rings and vintage engagement rings are those from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras. Named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign), antique Georgian rings, be they engagement rings or otherwise, are also coveted by collectors. Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. The late-1700s paste jewelry was a predecessor to what we now call fashion or costume jewelry.
The Art Nouveau movement (1880–1910) brought with it rings inspired by the natural world. Antique Art Nouveau rings might feature depictions of winged insects and fauna as well as women, who were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized, frequently with long flowing hair. Art Deco jewelry, on the other hand, which originated during the 1920s and ’30s, is by and large “white jewelry.” White metals, primarily platinum, were favored over yellow gold in the design of antique Art Deco rings and other accessories as well as geometric motifs, with women drawn to the era’s dazzling cocktail rings in particular.
Whether you’re hunting down a chunky classic for a Prohibition-themed cocktail party or seeking a clean contemporary design to complement your casual ensemble, find an exquisite collection of antique, new and vintage rings on 1stDibs.
- What is a flawless diamond?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A flawless diamond is a diamond that has no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10X magnification. Flawless diamonds are incredibly rare because all naturally occurring diamonds will have inclusions. Shop a collection of diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022It is impossible to say the exact number of Flawless diamonds that are in existence. However, diamonds with the Flawless clarity rating are extremely rare. This category consists of around only a half a percent of diamonds in existence. On 1stDibs, find an array of authentic Flawless diamond pieces.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023Yes, flawless diamonds are more expensive than diamonds with imperfections. Flawless diamonds have no visible inclusions and the surface of these precious stones is free of blemishes. Flawless diamonds are considered to be rare and of higher quality, which renders them more valuable. The 4Cs, the grading system that was established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1950s, are the guidelines that determine how flawless diamonds are graded. Find diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
- Roman Malakov DiamondsMarch 22, 2021An internally flawless diamond is a diamond that does not have any visible inclusions under a 10x magnification.

- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Red diamonds are considered the most rare diamond color on this planet with less than 30 true red diamonds in known existence. Interestingly, red diamonds get their color from carbon, and are a rare occurrence in the atomic structure. Other diamonds get their color from impurities that exist in the gem. You’ll find a variety of diamond jewelry from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, Russian diamonds are real diamonds but they also might be created diamonds. Calling a diamond a Russian diamond only refers to the place of origin, not whether it’s real or not. While Russia does mine diamonds, they also produce lab-grown diamonds, sometimes called synthetic or created diamonds. No matter how they’re produced, they are still real diamonds. Shop a collection of authentic Russian diamonds from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Whether or not a green diamond is real depends on the gemstone in question. Green diamonds do occur naturally, however they are very rare. As a result, most green diamond gemstones are man-made. Shop a range of expertly vetted green diamond gemstone jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021Yes, a blue diamond is a real diamond. Contrary to popular belief, diamonds come in an array of colors aside from clear. Blue diamonds are neither color-treated nor enhanced to deliver the icy shade, which can range from a seafoam green to a royal blue.
- 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021Yes, a natural diamond is a real diamond. The stones are made from carbon that’s been compressed beneath the earth’s surface for billions of years. The result is a diamond, the hardest known substance on earth.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Whether or not yellow diamonds are real depends on the piece. Yellow diamonds occur in nature when nitrogen mixes with the gem. Because the gemstones are rare, most yellow diamond jewelry features man-made gemstones. Find a selection of expertly vetted yellow diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
- Are pink diamonds real diamonds?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Whether pink diamonds are real depends on the gemstone in question. Real pink diamonds do occur in nature, but they are very rare. As a result, most pink diamonds are man-made by tinting lab-created diamonds. On 1stDibs, find a range of pink diamond gemstone jewelry.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024Yes, an uncut diamond is a real diamond. However, it may not look much like the diamonds that you're accustomed to seeing set in jewelry. Uncut means that a diamond is in its raw form. Most jewelry features diamonds that have facets cut into their surfaces, and jewelry makers polish the stones to enhance their appearance. Shop a variety of diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Yes, a black diamond is a real diamond. Black diamonds have the same chemical composition as traditional colorless diamonds. Although black diamonds are rarer than colorless diamonds, they are less coveted and therefore cheaper.
- Is black diamond a real diamond?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, a black diamond is indeed a real diamond. There are three types of black diamonds; natural, Carbonado and treated black diamonds. Treated black diamonds are altered with high pressure and high heat to achieve the black color. Shop a collection of expertly vetted gems from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Yes, chocolate diamonds are the same as champagne diamonds. Often marketed as two different types of diamonds, both champagne and chocolate diamonds refer to the yellowish-brown hue of the stone: champagne for a lighter hue, chocolate for a deeper hue. Find a variety of champagne diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022An emerald cut diamond is amongst the most unique gems in the world. Only 3% of the worlds diamonds are emerald cut. - What is a Polki diamond?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Polki are diamonds in their pure form. Unlike other diamonds, polki do not undergo chemical treatments. Therefore, Polki diamonds are quite opaque in color and slightly rustic looking.
- What is a pave diamond?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Pave diamonds refer to a type of engagement ring setting. A pave setting is one in which the shank of the ring is lined with small diamonds. Diamonds are considered pave set when they are as small as .01-.02 carats.
- What is a cushion diamond?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021A cushion-cut diamond is a diamond with soft rounded edges — it draws on an old diamond shape and it combines a square cut with rounded corners.
