Thonet Chairs Lounge For Sale on 1stDibs

At 1stDibs, there are many versions of the ideal thonet chairs lounge for your home. Each thonet chairs lounge for sale was constructed with extraordinary care, often using wood, fabric and metal. If you’re shopping for a thonet chairs lounge, we have 266 options in-stock, while there are 10 modern editions to choose from as well. Whether you’re looking for an older or newer thonet chairs lounge, there are earlier versions available from the 19th Century and newer variations made as recently as the 21st Century. When you’re browsing for the right thonet chairs lounge, those designed in mid-century modern, Art Deco and modern styles are of considerable interest. Many designers have produced at least one well-made thonet chairs lounge over the years, but those crafted by Thonet, Marcel Breuer and Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH are often thought to be among the most beautiful.

How Much is a Thonet Chairs Lounge?

A thonet chairs lounge can differ in price owing to various characteristics — the average selling price 1stDibs is $2,987, while the lowest priced sells for $10 and the highest can go for as much as $30,000.

Finding the Right seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Thonet Chairs Lounge
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
A Thonet chair can be any chair developed by the furniture maker Thonet, which has been manufacturing furniture for more than 180 years. However, most people are referring to one designed by founder Gebrüder Thonet. It features a bentwood frame produced with a patent steam method that Thonet patented and a curved seat. Find a range of Thonet chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
Perhaps the most significant thing about the Thonet chair was that it was the first chair to ever be shipped in parts with instructions that allowed the purchaser to assemble it themselves. As a result, the beech wood and rattan chairs could be mass produced and sold all over the world more easily. Shop a range of Thonet chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
An authentic Thonet chair will have the company’s name with a solid line underneath carved somewhere on the chair. The brand can also confirm the authenticity and age of a Thonet chair via its website. Shop a variety of authentic Thonet furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
A Thonet-style chair is a wooden chair that has a curvy, bent backrest, a round seat and subtly flared legs. The chairs get their name from the original manufacturer, Thonet, which produced chairs in the mid-century modern style in Europe during the 20th century. Shop a range of Thonet furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Michael Thonet is a German-Austrian furniture maker who designed the famed bentwood chair in 1830. His last name, Thonet, is pronounced “TOE-net,” but it’s commonly mispronounced “tho-NAY.” Shop a collection of vintage and modern Michael Thonet pieces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Yes, Thonet chairs are marked. You will usually find the brand's label on a tag or burned into the wood under the seat. On 1stDibs, you can shop a variety of expertly vetted Thonet furniture from top sellers around the world.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Whether or not Thonet chairs are stackable depends on their design. The bentwood chairs produced by the company do easily stack, but others like cantilever chairs do not. Find a range of Thonet chairs forms some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 29, 2024
A lounge chair is a type of recliner that is often accompanied by an ottoman as a footrest. It’s merely a comfortable armchair, and the shapes of lounge chairs as well as the materials used to make this kind of seat are extremely diverse. Whether or not chaise longues make the cut for this category is a matter of frequent debate.

Similar to recliners, there are many styles of lounge chairs. On 1stDibs, find a broad range of unique lounge chairs that includes everything from antique Victorian-era seating to vintage mid-century modern lounge chairs by craftspersons such as Hans Wegner to contemporary choices from today’s innovative designers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To identify a Thonet rocking chair, look for the company name. You will normally find it stamped directly onto the underside of the seat, arms or legs. You can find a collection of expertly vetted Thonet rocking chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
To tell if a Thonet chair is real, you can use Thonet's authenticity verification service. To take advantage of it, you will need to take many photographs of the chair from different angles and close-up images of markings and paper labels. You can learn more about the authentication process on the Thonet website. Shop a diverse assortment of Thonet chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
The difference between a lounge chair and a chair is specificity. A chair is the general term for furniture typically designed to seat one person at a time, and there are many different kinds of chairs, including dining, accent and office chairs. Lounge chairs are another example of a specific type of chair. They are chairs with a footrest that allows you to elevate your feet while sitting. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021
A sling lounge chair is a chair formed of metal or wooden frame to which a piece of flexible material is loosely fitted. It is used to relax while the sitter remains engaged in an activity such as reading a book or having a conversation. Find a variety of vintage and antique sling lounge chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
Whether lounge chairs are comfortable or not is a matter of personal opinion. However, providing a comfortable place to sit is the main function of a lounge chair. After all, the addition of the footrest makes it possible to kick up your feet and relax. Many makers design lounge chairs with comfort in mind, adding features like cushioning and/or ergonomic backrests and seats. Explore a wide variety of lounge chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A chaise longue chair — or “chaise lounge,” as it is sometimes called in America — is a reclining upholstered sofa that is long enough to support one's legs. A comfortable common ground between sofas and daybeds, early iterations of chaise longues were discovered in Ancient Egypt and were later frequently used in both Greece and Rome. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary chaise lounge chairs from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
