Brazilian Lounge Chairs

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Jorge Zalszupin's Presidential Lounge Chair, Brazilian Mid-Century Modern Design
By Jorge Zalszupin
Located in Sao Paulo, SP
The "Presidencial" lounge lounge armchair is a true icon of Brazilian modern design, created by the legendary Polish-Brazilian architect and designer Jorge Zalszupin in the 1960s. This rare and coveted piece showcases the fusion of two cultures, with its base made of tubular steel and black lacquered metal slats, topped with Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood veneers in an unusual bentwood design. Zalszupin's innovative use of molded laminate wood allowed him to create the curves he desired, without the need for costly manual processes. This resulted in a beautifully unique armchair, part of a series composed of a sofa and armchair, that has become a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of Brazilian modern design. The lounge armchair's backrest is composed of profiled hardwood veneer slats, giving the piece a light and organic structure that elegantly accommodates voluminous cushions. Its "U" form seat rests on chrome-plated steel legs with tubular feet, while the armchair's rosewood-reinforced slat back adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. The Presidencial lounge chair is in very good vintage condition and has received new upholsteries in suede. Its sleek and modern design makes it a perfect addition to any space, whether in a home or office setting. While the armchair can be displayed without its original cushions, it also comes with a custom cushion for added comfort and style. Overall, the Presidencial armchair...

Pair of Concha Chairs by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, 1953, Brazilian Design
By Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, Martin Eisler, Carlo Hauner

Concha armchair is one of the most iconic pieces designed by Martin Eisler (1913-1977). The armchair was created in 1953 and produced by Móveis Artesanal and then Forma S.A. Móveis e Objetos de Arte. “Galeria Artesanal,” the first showroom that presented the furniture and objects created by Moveis Artesanal and HG Ceramica, used to sell the Concha Armchair and also show it in their advertisements in magazines. The armchair features a comfortable and extremely reclined shell-shaped upholstered seat that fits the body. Other pieces combined the same iron structure with different seat types in shell shape: upholstered, made of strings, or leather straps. The pieces are in original condition. Restoration services...

Brazilian Modern Armchair Set in Hardwood & Beige Leather by Liceu de Artes 1960
By Liceu de Artes e Ofícios
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this one-of-a-kind Mid-Century Modern armchair set in Hardwood & Beige Leather designed by Liceu de Artes e Oficios, in the sixties is nothing less than spectacular. The delicate armchairs are made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, and re-upholstered in beige leather. The Canoa (canoe) model was inspired by the Brazilian canoes used in the Amazon. This can be seen in the armchair arms that resemble a canoe handle. The woodwork is spectacular and can be seen throughout the piece but mostly in the arms and legs. The old Jacaranda has colorful veins showcasing the age of the piece as well as levity in its design. The Italian leather is smooth, and the armchairs are not only beautiful but very comfortable. The wood was refinished and besides the marks of age (which are minimal) the set is in excellent condition. Sofa is available for sale also. The set is displayed in our showroom next to a green Sergio Rodrigues Sofa...
