Space Age Paintings

SPACE AGE STYLE

Vintage Space Age furniture captured post–World War II optimism with swooping shapes, bowed lines and experimentation with new materials including plastic and fiberglass.

From the launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957 to the landing of Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon in 1969, the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States propelled advancements in technology that transformed culture. Space Age design encompassed fashion, architecture, cars, furniture and objects for the home, bringing wonder and hope for the future into everyday life.

Coinciding with Pop art, Space Age style featured bold colors and forms. Eero Aarnio’s Ball chair, which debuted in 1966, used molded fiberglass for a capsule-like space while Verner Panton’s 1959 Panton chair was a single piece of molded plastic for a gravity-defying S shape. Red versions of Olivier Mourgue’s 1964 Djinn chair were futuristic enough to appear on the space station in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Today, Joe Colombo is revered as a master of modern Italian design thanks to the provocative modular furniture pieces he created, such as the Tube chair and the Elda armchair, both of which embody the future-forward spirit of the Space Age.

The Space Age spirit extended to home building too. The futuristic Case Study Houses, which were designed by the likes of Pierre Koenig, Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra and Whitney R. Smith, are considered a high point of modernism and the Southern California lifestyle.

Sometimes the nods to space exploration were more literal, like moon and star motifs or the 1965 Eclisse lamp by Vico Magistretti that saw the mid-century Italian designer integrating a movable inner shade to “eclipse” the light source. Alongside the pioneering moon missions, JVC manufactured the Videosphere portable television reminiscent of the Apollo 11 space helmets.

Although the style faded in the 1970s — with the 1975 joining of the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts signaling a new era of cooperation and the global oil crisis impacting the availability of plastics — the era’s innovations influenced designers into the 21st century such as Zaha Hadid and Djivan Schapira.

Original Space Artist Andreas Nottebohm Acrylic on Aluminum Painting KNM 1387
Located in Tustin, CA
Visionary, abstract original acrylic on aluminum painting by famous NASA Space Artist, Andreas Nottebohn, titled "KNM 1387" depicts a colorful, otherworldly scene on a shimmering sheet of scored metal. This incredible celestial painting frees the viewer from a one dimensional perspective by suggesting a vast and mysterious distance. Information on the back of the painting states, “KNM 1387 Spec 1 of 48 similar original paintings 1996 30 x 24 Acrylic on Aluminum”. Hand signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Very nicely custom framed in a transitional style black frame with wide silver inner lining. Framed, the painting measures approximately 35" high x 29" wide x 2" deep. Unframed painting measures approximately 30" high x 24" wide. One of the key innovators of metal painting, Nottebohm creates what might be called sculptures on a flat plane. By removing microscopic layers from the metal surface, he transforms the material into patterns of shimmering light. The unusual luminous quality of Nottebohm's work comes from the aluminum surfaces he scores, using a variety of manual and machine tools. Aluminum can create light and movement that you cannot create with anything else. It is similar to the sun reflecting on water, and you see one painting from one side and another painting from another side. East German born (1944) Andreas Nottebohm moved to Munich as a teenager and immigrated to the San Francisco Bay area of the United States in 1979, after touring the U.S. for a one man exhibition. While in Germany in the 1970s, he was one of the co-founders of the Society for Art and Science in Munich. Around the time he relocated to the United States, he was invited to participate in the NASA Art...

Mid Century Modern Painting - Ballet Dancer - Pierre Grisot
By Pierre Grisot
Located in Casteren, Noord-Brabant
A lovely vintage painting of a ballet dancer, made by the French artist Pierre Grisot. Oil painting on hardboard, framed in a classic frame. Dimensions frame: 47 x 42 cm Dimensions painting: 25 x 20 cm Free shipping Pierre Gristot. France, 1911-1995 Grisot was born in Paris, he was a French post-Impressionist artist who was a member of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Grisot painted in a light-hearted style that was all his own. Whether he was painting fashionable ladies of the day, nudes or flowers, his work was always full of colour and life and was very different from the styles of his contemporary painters. His paintings now serve as vintage reminders of the style of the mid 20th Century. One of the most enduring features of Grisot's work was his brilliant use of color and his evocative renditions of the female visage. Grisot was born in 1911 in Paris. Grisot worked as an engineer but gave up this career and moved to Paris, where he studied painting for a year at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. After this he studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he obtained his diploma as a drawing teacher. Grisot taught drawing and painting for many years, but he also gave up this work to be able to paint freely. The first exhibition of Grisot's paintings took place in Paris in 1942. In 1951 he received a prize for engraving and in 1952 the French government awarded him a scholarship for a stay of several months in Tunisia. At that time the museum of Besançon acquired two of his works. Grisot took part in many exhibitions of paintings in Paris, especially in the Salons des Independants and with the group of "The Paris School", where he exhibited together with artists such as Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy and Villon. He produced an engaging oeuvre that depicts a colorful and light-hearted world of young dancing girls, nude models, coquettes and ladies of leisure...
