About the Artist: Ward Lockwood (1894–1963) Ward Lockwood was a pioneering American modernist artist born in Kansas, known for his contributions to abstract painting and his impact on the Taos art community. Lockwood’s artistic journey began at the University of Kansas, followed by studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His career was temporarily interrupted by service in World War I, where his exposure to European culture and the works of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh had a lasting influence on his artistic style. After his service, Lockwood spent time in Paris, where he studied at the Académie Ranson and met fellow artist Kenneth Adams. Their travels through the French countryside deepened Lockwood’s connection to European art, which he later infused into his work back in Kansas. In 1926, Lockwood settled in Taos, New Mexico, where he became an influential member of the Taos Society of Artists. He created murals for the Federal Arts Project and taught at the Broadmoor Academy and later at the University of Texas. Lockwood’s influence continued to grow, and in the 1950s, he taught at UC Berkeley and the University of Kansas, all while experimenting with abstraction and assemblage art styles. Lockwood eventually returned to Taos, where he continued his artistic endeavors, becoming an integral figure in the Taos art scene. His work continues to be celebrated for its vibrant abstraction and his exploration of modernist forms.
