About the Item
Signed, verso, on original backing, 'Shannon Bickford' (American, 20th century) with artist information, titled, 'Window Series III' and painted circa 1990. Sheet dimensions: 14.75 x 14 inches
Shannon Bickford received degrees in Biology, Special Major (combining Art and Biology), and Psychology from California State University at Fresno. She has exhibited throughout California and taught art at the State Center Community College District, CSUF, and UOP. Her biological and botanical illustrations have been published in laboratory manuals and in entomological and botanical texts.
The artist says of her work:
"I paint in a realistic manner, but strive to go beyond realism to a space more spiritual, personal, and engaging. I use that realism to tell a story, often intensely personal and incorporating my personal symbols, and sometimes further explore that story by writing on my painting. Often images end up as mandalas. I did my dog paintings towards the end of the 1980's and the beginning of the 1990's. I used charcoal wash (sprinkled charcoal on the paper and splashed it with water) and darks often mixed with India ink. On some, I used acrylic paint. I would label them Mixed media with watercolor. They are all on Arches or Fabriano paper."
and, of this work,
"I had a Weimaraner named Belle that I painted a lot. Other dogs belonged to a friend who trained dogs and every summer would have a birthday party for her dogs and invited about 20 dogs. This window was one in the house on Larkspur Lane in Stockton."
