About the Item
All the sun and the joie de vivre of the mediterranean in one large drawing! Dated 1959, the work evokes Brigitte Bardot, the French Riviera and French New Wave Cinema.
The artist is Dany Lartigue, son of photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue, Dany was brought up between Paris and Saint Tropez, which was still a fisherman’s village at the time. Although as an artist Dany worked from Montmartre studio, the Cote d’Azur of his childhood remained his spiritual home, and he returned there often. In Saint Tropez, by then fashionable, he would meet his friends Juliette Greco, Pablo Picasso, and Boris Vian.
Dany Lartigue’s art is down-to earth and irresistibly poetic at the same time. The artist’s sunny nature and zest for life shine through in the work presented here.
Dany Lartigue’s exhibited extensively. Internationally, he had one man shows with Waddington Galleries in Dublin and Montreal, with the British Council in London, as well as in Japan and in Germany. In France, he had one man shows at the mythical Galerie Maeght, where he also showed his work as part of the the group "Les Mains éblouies", which counted Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder and Antoni Tapies as members.
He exhibited at the Galerie Drouant-David (who at the same time also had the young Bernard Buffet under contract), and at other prestigious galleries in Paris, Toulon and Saint Tropez.
It is in Saint Tropez that the Dany Lartigue Museum (called “Butterfly House”) is located. The drawing offered here consists of two sheets of paper attached to each other - unsurprisingly, given the size. A horizontal line is hence visible about 5 inches from the top. The work of art was lovingly mounted on to canvas and a quality stretcher, probably immediately, or shortly after its creation. The picture is presented in its original very narrow artist's strip frame.

African American Woman artist Mailou Jones Cezannian Cote d'Azur cubist village
Located in Norwich, GB
If you are interested in African American Art and in Women in the Arts, I will certainly not need to introduce Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1988). Often associated with the Harlem Renaissance, her
work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Muscarelle Museum of Art, and The Phillips Collection. I am proud to present an original watercolour painting by the artist which dates from the late 1940s or early 1950s.
Jones was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a father who became the first African-American to earn a law degree from Suffolk Law School. Jones's parents encouraged her to draw and paint using watercolors during her childhood. She held her first solo exhibition at the age of seventeen in Martha's Vineyard.
He career began in the 1930s and she continued to produce art work until her death in 1998 at the age of 92. Her style shifted and evolved multiple times in response to influences in her life, especially her extensive travels. She felt that her greatest contribution to the art world was "proof of the talent of black artists". Her work echoes her pride in her African roots and American ancestry.
In 1937, Jones received a fellowship to study in Paris at the Académie Julian, bringing her to France for the first time. The French were appreciative of her paintings and talent and Loïs Mailou Jones was thrilled at the country’s racial tolerance, so different from her reality in the United States.
She summered in France annually from 1945 to 1953, sharing studio with her lifelong friend Celine Marie Tabary in Cabris, France.
It was during one of these sojourns that the lovely work presented here was created.
Our painting depicts the village of Tourettes sur Loup, just north of Nice, in the Provence Cote d'Azur region, about 14 miles from Cabris.
Please note its similarities with her painting "Arreau, Hautes-Pyrénées" in the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Her portrayal of the picturesque village nestled in a valley evokes landscape paintings by Paul Cézanne, a stylistic influence she acknowledged.
Over the course of the following 10 years, Jones exhibited at the Phillips Collection, Seattle Art Museum, National Academy of Design, the Barnett-Aden Gallery, Pennsylvania's Lincoln University, Howard University, galleries in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In 1952, the book Loïs Mailou Jones: Peintures 1937–1951 was published, reproducing more than one hundred of her art pieces completed in France. At the Barnett-Aden Gallery, Jones exhibited with a group of prominent black artists, such as Jacob Lawrence and Alma Thomas. These artists and others were known as the "Little Paris...

James Stroudley
Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year.
From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. However, much of his later work was abstract. In 1971, his former student, Peter Coker, paid homage to Stroudley by including his work in the exhibition ‘Pupil & Masters’, held at Westgate House, Long Melford, Suffolk.
Stroudley married three times, and his wives included the fashion artist to the Sun newspaper...
