About the Item

Maitland de Gogorza, born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, in 1896, studied art at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League. Before joining the Smith College faculty in 1929, de Gogorza worked for the publicity department at the Bell Telephone Company in New York and did commercial art work. During the World War he served in the Medical Corps with the A. E. F., and after the armistice studied art in Paris with a group selected from the American forces. de Gogorza also taught at the Pratt Institute, the Berkshire Summer School of Art and Boothbay Studios, an art school run by Frank L. Allen. He illustrated several books including Kennebec: Cradle of Americans [Rivers of America Series], and children’s novels The Road to Carolina, Jane’s Island and A Barrel of Clams. His work is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Minneapolis Institute of Art; and Smith College Museum of Art.
