L’Homme à la Lampe (The Man with the Lamp) is a signed and dated ink drawing on paper/card
Attributed to Marc Chagall (1887–1985). This artwork was consigned by Mr Kevin Murphy to Christie’s South Kensington Ltd on 30 April 2001, with an auction estimate of £4,000, as recorded in a Christie’s “Schedule of Property”. A written provenance states that Murphy was gifted the drawing in the late 20th century by an elderly Jewish couple he drove for, who claimed it was given to the woman’s father by Chagall in the 1920s when Chagall was teaching in Russia. This piece offers a rare opportunity to own a work with documented history from a prestigious auction house and a compelling personal provenance story. Buyers are strongly advised to verify its attribution and authenticity independently.
L’Homme à la Lampe captures a single, evocative figure in a dreamlike composition. The central figure, presumably a man, is depicted with a large, expressive face, his features rendered with bold, fluid lines that convey a whimsical yet contemplative expression. A vertical line splits his face, introducing a Cubist-like fragmentation. To his right stands a tall, narrow lamp with a small flame, possibly symbolising hope or spirituality—a recurring theme in Chagall’s work. The man’s raised hand gestures towards the lamp, suggesting a connection to its light. Light, sketchy lines create a minimal background, while dense, scribbled patterns in the lower left add texture and contrast. The paper shows signs of ageing, with noticeable yellowing and a small creases consistent with its 1921 date .

Marc Chagall
Described by art critic Robert Hughes as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century," the Russian-French modernist Marc Chagall worked in nearly every artistic medium. Influenced by Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism, he developed his own distinctive style, combining avant-garde techniques and motifs with elements drawn from Eastern European Jewish folk art.
Born Moishe Segal in 1887, in Belarus (then part of the Russian empire), Chagall is often celebrated for his figurative paintings, but he also produced stained-glass windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, in France; for the United Nations, in New York; and for the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, as well as book illustrations, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine-art prints. Characterized by a bold color palette and whimsical imagery, his works are often narrative, depicting small-village scenes and quotidian moments of peasant life, as in his late painting The Flight into Egypt from 1980.
Before World War I, Chagall traveled between St. Petersburg, Paris and Berlin. When the conflict broke out, he returned to Soviet-occupied Belarus, where he founded the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1922. He fled to the United States during World War II but in 1947 returned to France, where he spent the rest of his life. His peripatetic career left its mark on his style, which was distinctly international, incorporating elements from each of the cultures he experienced.

Jerry O'Day is also known as Geraldine Heib. Born in Oakland, California, on June 17, 1912. Geraldine Heib assumed the name Jerry O'Day at an early age. She grew up in Washington and studied in Seattle at the Cornish School of Fine Arts. Upon moving to the San Francisco Bay area in 1938, she further studied with Bufano as a muralist for two years. O'Day wed sculptor David Lemon and had a gallery in a converted cod fishery in Belvedere from 1942 until 1963. At that time, the couple moved to a houseboat in Sausalito, where she remained until her demise on March 30, 1986.
Post War California artist, Jerry O'Day studied at the Cornish School of Fine Arts in Seattle; studied with Beniamino Bufano for two years. She lived in the artist's colony at the Cod fishery with artist David Lemon on Belvedere Island in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1942 - 1963.
