About the Item

Victor PROUVÉ (1858-1943) Study of a cat Charcoal on paper 13,5 × 13 cm Provenance : Marianne Prouvé-Georges (1905-1994)’s collection, artist’s daughter Frame : 25,5 × 25,5 cm (high quality anti-reflection glass) A major figure of the Nancy School, Victor Prouvé is the father of the architect and designer Jean Prouvé. A multidisciplinary artist, he was above all a painter and draftsman, but also devoted himself to engraving, sculpture, illustration and bookbinding.  Victor Prouvé took his first drawing course in Nancy from 1873 to 1877 before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel. He exhibited at the Salon from 1885 onwards where his work was particularly well received.  Victor Prouvé befriended the master glassmaker Emile Gallé, for whom he designed glassware and furniture designs that were exhibited at the 1889 and 1900 World's Fairs. His work was fruitful, punctuated by public commissions and collaborations with artists and craftsmen emblematic of Art Nouveau such as Louis Majorelle, Eugène Vallin and the Daum brothers. Very attached to his native city, Victor Prouvé was one of the founding members of the École de Nancy in 1901, becoming its president in 1904 after the death of Emile Gallé. He also directed the Nancy School of Fine Arts from 1919 to 1940.
