Harold Town
Ink Stretch 1

1970

About the Item

Harold Town (1924-1990) is renowned across Canada for his eclectic and dynamic body of work. In the 1950s, Town established his reputation with a series of abstract monotypes (called "Single Autographic Prints"). He would exhibit these works at the Venice Biennale to great fanfare in Europe and beyond. By the 1960s, he was considered the most famous artist in Canada. Town fearlessly experimented. Consider how different his "Toy Horse" is from his "Single Autographic Prints" or even his "Pop Star/Icon" works. In every decade, Town would switch gears and embark on new series with new material, courage and conviction. Until the late 1960's Town's abstract works were critically and commercially embraced. The "Stretch" series, and the response, was a major departure from his previous work. Was Town responding to emerging trends in the art world (such as Minimalism and hard-edge abstraction)? Town's oeuvre has little connection to minimalism, and he can arguably be understood as a maximalist, always aiming for extravagance, layers, and bravado. Interestingly when he debuted the "Stretch" series it was met with critical ambivalence and the production was short-lived. This bold work on paper is an exemplary output from this significant era. A series of bold, jet-black stretches alternately contract and expand, interlocking across the sheet. With minimal detail, Town masterfully captures a powerful sense of motion within the composition. Town's striking black ink "Stretch" drawings are a fascinating bridge between the artist's works on paper and prints like "Popstars/Icons," which both showcase his mastery of simplicity and form. Today, the "Stretch" series looks remarkably contemporary. For the uninitiated, many assume this body of work to be brand new. The piece presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the thirty canvases created during this brief and highly distinctive period of production. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is one of our favorite sculptors and an important contributor to public art in Toronto. In addition to the numerous public sculptures in Toronto by Eloul, his works can be found in many other prominent open spaces around the world, from California to Israel. Most familiar with Eloul associate his work with his signature forms; large brushed aluminum (or steel) angled rectangles. However his earlier work was realized in stone. This fine sculpture, a form that is revisited and eventually created in metal, is made of Jerusalem Stone...

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) stands as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. She is renowned for her monochromatic sculptural wooden constructions. However, it is important to emphasize that Nevelson toiled and experimented for nearly 30 years before arriving at her signature style, and overdue success, in the late 1950s. In recent years there has been an increase in scholarship, awareness, and collector interest in Nevelson's early work, as she was an early adopter of modernism in America. This drawing is a fine example from this era. After Nevelson divorced in 1931, she was finally liberated to devote herself to art-making. She studied at the Art Students League in New York and made several influential trips to Europe where she began studying with Hans Hoffmann...

Countably Infinite, 2022 by On Hansen Oil wax, acrylic, graphite, organic ink, and crayon on Awagami paper Image size: 35.03 in. H x 25.59 in. W Unframed ____________________________ On Hansen originally from Scandinavia is the pseudonym used by the photographer Cristian Hunter, a third-generation artist who has spent most of his professional career as a photographer. His work bears the traces of lived experiences, exploring the possibilities of formal abstraction, and seeking an organic experience between space and time through painting and photography. “There is no longer a single idea explaining everything, but an infinite number of essences giving meaning to an infinite number of objects. The world comes to a stop, but also lights up.” ― Albert Camus...
