This poignant yellow pastel landscape is by the renowned painter Wolf Kahn, whose work is famously characterized by abstraction and figuration, as his gorgeously colored landscapes transform into color fields. This particular work is special because it came from the private collection of distinguished art critic and artist Lawrence (Larry) Campbell, who received it as a gift from Wolf Kahn in 1974. It is accompanied by a hand signed and dated Letter of Provenance from Mr. Campbell's daughter which reads, "This painting has been in my home since 1974 when it was given to my father, the late Lawrence (Larry) Campbell, by the artist, Wolf Kahn. In the lower right hand corner of the painting, Mr. Kahn wrote in pencil, 'To Larry in friendship- Wolf 1974.' My father was also a painter, a Director at the Arts Students League of New York, Professor of Art at Pratt Institute & Brooklyn College and an Art Critic for Art News and Art in America Magazines, for over 50 years." This work on paper, Ruckus Rodeo, is a unique study by Red Grooms for one of the most popular works of art in the Museum of Modern Art, Ft. Worth, Texas's collection. Ruckus Rodeo is an immense, walk-through work of art that covers 1,237 square feet of gallery space. It consists of painted two-dimensional surfaces and sculptural three-dimensional figures that re-create the Fort Worth rodeo. Grooms has referred to this work as a "sculpto-pictorama." Sculpture wire, canvas, burlap, acrylic paint, and a fiberglass compound known as celastic were used to construct the work’s Texas-sized, larger-than-life, three-dimensional caricatures of rodeo archetypes, which include the rodeo queen and her steed, a bucking bronc, playful rodeo clowns, and a giant yellow bull named Butter.
Ruckus Rodeo was commissioned for the Museum's 1976 exhibition The Great American Rodeo. Grooms was one of eleven artists invited to create a work for this show. In preparation, he attended every rodeo performance during Fort Worth's 1975 Stock Show and made many sketches. From these studies, Grooms drew a panoramic rodeo scene spanning more than seven feet, which served as the basis for Ruckus Rodeo's design. Grooms returned to his studio in New York to fabricate the work's major figures. In 1976, he returned to Fort Worth with the talented fifteen-member group of painters, sculptors, engineers, and carpenters known as the "Ruckus Construction Co.," who helped in the final assembly of Grooms's robust tableau.
Associate Curator Andrea Karnes commented, "Ruckus Rodeo portrays the chaos, entertainment, and danger of the Fort Worth rodeo. Grooms's engaging work is characterized by a grand sense of spectacle, encompassing the ritual, pageantry, and disorderly commotion of a real rodeo event. The artist's interest in naive and primitive objects, such as folk art puppets and toys, is easily seen in this work. His rich, arbitrary use of bold and unmodulated colors combined with angular contours creates a loud, brash ambience. Despite the work's cartoonish flair, it is clearly inflected with an urban sensibility. The characters' outfits, for example, are more like the vibrant apparel of the urban cowboy...

'Barge on the River Seine', watercolour on paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides Paris into the left and right banks. This particular scene appears to be well down river beyond the city as the greenery along the banks points to. The Seine’s collection of lovely small towns happily graces its banks and proudly conveys French culture. Of course, the best way to experience all of these towns and villages is on a river cruise. The Seine is second only to the Loire River which is France's longest. It rises 18 miles (30 kilometres) northwest of Dijon and flows in a northwesterly direction through Paris before emptying into the English Channel at Le Havre. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided.
About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing.
