Expressionist Cafe Scene, Bagnoles, Au Casino, Circle of Fikret Saygi Moualla
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th Century French Expressionist gouache and watercolour on paper of a café scene. The painting is signed bottom right but as yet undeciphered. The work is titled to the back of the framing 'Bagnoles. Au Casino' and numbered. Presented in plain wood frame under glass, probably the artist's original framing. A lively and colourful scene of waiters serving their patrons in the bar of a casino. The servers are dressed in crisp linen jackets, black trousers, bow ties whilst balancing their trays of drinks. The customers are dressed in all their colourful finery for an evening at the tables. The artist has captured the feeling of the scene, noise, bustle, conversations and excitement. Bold splashes of colour animate the scene and create an almost Fauvist perspective. The painting in style, execution and subject matter is very much like the work of Fikret Muallâ who was painting at this period. Fikret Muallâ Saygı ) was a 20th-century avant-garde painter of Turkish descent. His work reflects influences from Expressionism and Fauvism, with subject matter focusing on Paris street life, social gatherings such as cafés and circuses. Though born in Istanbul he spent much of his career painting in Paris...

L V Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) A Man writing at his desk , Signed pastel
Located in Paris, FR
Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) A Man writing at his desk, 18th century interior scene Pastel on paper Signed upper right 20.5 x 15.8 cm Framed under glass : 37 x 31.5 cm It is known that Guirand de Scevola was very interested in the Palace of Versailles and its Old Regime atmosphere, that he often painted it and that he participated in the Versailles Revival movement at the beginning of the century. This probably led him to paint scenes in the 18th century style, for which he was particularly well known and which are still sought after. What is striking is the modernity of the execution of our pastel, which obviously contrasts with its subject in the style of the 18th century. Guirand de Scevoal is a great colourist and he proves it here with eclat, by building up his composition with white pastel highlights, contrasting with brown and black. There is something of the northern painters in this treatment of light. All this, as always with him, is very subtle. The light radiating from the window is almost an abstract notation, but it gives meaning to this interior scene. Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) was a French painter. He was student of Fernand Cormon and Pierre Dupuis...

Edward Henry Corbould, Westminster Abbey, The Wedding
By Edward Henry Corbould
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This mid-19th-century watercolour by British artist Edward Henry Corbould (1815-1905) illustrates the impressive wedding of his good friend Henry Weigall (1829-1925) and Lady Rose Fane (1834-1921). It was presented to Weigall and remained with the family for generations. On the 15th of August 1866, Westminster Abbey was brimming with anticipation ahead of this notable event. Weigall, a portrait artist, was respected within elite circles having produced numerous portraits for the Royal Family. While his bride, Rose, was the daughter of John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland, and Priscilla Anne Wellesley-Pole, the niece of the Duke of Wellington. A reporter described the proceedings: “The marriage of Lady Rose Fane, only sister of the Earl of Westmorland, to Mr Henry Weigall, the eminent portrait painter, took place at St Peter’s, Westminster, on Wednesday in the presence of a large and fashionable congregation. Lady Rose left the residence of her mother, the Dowager Countess, accompanied by her noble brother, and passed into the Abbey attended by the following young ladies as bridesmaids, wearing white dresses trimmed with green - Lord Westmorland’s colours on the turf - Lady Grace Fane, Miss Thomson, Miss Alice Weigall, Miss Lowther, Miss Ada Ibbetson, and Miss Alice Bagot. The bride’s dress was of white satin, trimmed with Brussels lace...

Original pen and ink illustrations for Charles Dickens 'The Pickwick Papers'
By Hablot Knight Browne
Located in Woodbury, CT
English illustrator, etcher and painter. Best known as the illustrator of the novels of Charles Dickens, under the pen-name Phiz. Browne had little formal training as an artist. He sporadically attended the St Martin’s Lane Academy life-class and was apprenticed to the line-engraver William Finden (1787-1852). In 1834 he cancelled his indenture and established an illustrators’ workshop with fellow apprentice Robert Young, producing etchings and watercolours in preference to the more laborious line-engravings. In the spring of 1836, he met Charles Dickens who was then looking for someone to illustrate The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club which was originally issued in monthly parts. Robert Seymour (1798-1836) provided the illustrations for the first two instalments before his suicide. Robert Buss (1804-1875) illustrated the third instalment, but his work was not liked by Dickens and the remaining instalments were illustrated by Browne. Browne initially signed himself ‘Nemo’ and then ‘Phiz’ (a depicter of physiognomies) to harmonize with Dickens’s ‘Boz’. He went on to illustrate most of Dickens’ novels. Browne’s long career as an illustrator, including work for Charles Lever...
