About the Item
A watercolour and gouache on paper of pink chrysanthemums or oillets in a vase. The painting is monogram signed bottom right but as yet undeciphered. The painting is framed in a modern metal frame under glass.
A very charming and colourful view of pink spray chrysanthemums or oillets in a glass vase on a covered table. 'Oeillets', is a French word used for several kinds of cut flowers, many from the Dianthus genus. The artist has captured all the fullness and freshness of the blooms in a very happy composition. They have used a limited but extremely successful colour palette of pinks, mauves and greens. The use of shadow behind the vase also gives the painting a lovely depth and perspective.
Edouard Manet's last paintings were of flowers in glass vases. There are 20 such paintings known, with the last one painted in March 1883, barely two months before his death. Manet is credited with stating that an artist can say everything he has to say with "flowers, fruit, and clouds." His last flower paintings are a demonstration of that belief.
Pink Chrysanthemums symbolize femininity, motherhood, and maternal instincts in women and in Japanese culture longevity and are a representation of the Emperor and the Imperial family.
