About the Item

Carcassonne Citadel, France - Pastel Drawing by Charles Sumner Schneider Dramatic black and white pastel drawing of Carcassonne Citadel, France by Ohio artist and Architect Charles Sumner Schneider (1874-1932. This piece is bold and high-contrast, with the negative space of the paper used to create strong highlights. Of particular note are the different textures achieved in the trees, grass, and sky through variation of pressure. A family is resting on a bench in a park below the Citadel. Initialed "C.S.S." in the lower left corner. Tag from Korner & Wood gallery affixed to verso with title and signed ("Carcassonne, France by Charles Schneider") Presented in a vintage black frame with an off-white mat. SCHNEIDER, CHARLES SUMNER (1874-10 Mar. 1932), a brilliant eclectic architect from 1901-32, was born in Cleveland, son of Rev. William F. and Amanda (Esslinger) Schneider. Charles Sumner Schneider was educated in Cleveland at Outhwaite and Central High Schools. He was trained in architecture in the office of Granger and Meade, later Meade and Garfield, where he rose from chief draftsman to designer. He won several prizes awarded by the Cleveland Architectural Club. He studied under Gustav Umbenstock and Mr. Deglane at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Upon his return to Cleveland he formed a partnership with William S. Watterson, known as Watterson & Schneider. He later worked for the local office of George B. Post, as the superintendent of the Statler Hotel project. He then carried on an independent practice that specialized in residential architecture, designing several large estates for wealthy Ohioans. He was the architect of Stan Hwyet in Akron, the largest home built in Ohio. He was listed in the registered architect in the November 1940. He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church. He was made a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects. His brothers Arthur and E.G. were well known artists, the former was appointed artist to the Sultan of Morocco. Gallery Label on verso: KORNER & WOOD was one of Cleveland's notable bookstores. An institution in downtown Cleveland, it served as a gathering point for local writers and artists. The store was founded in 1900 at 157 Euclid Ave., near PUBLIC SQUARE, by Harry V. Korner (2 Jan. 1875-20 Oct. 1958) and A. Vinson. Named Vinson & Korner and located at 150 Euclid Ave., the store moved the following year into the Barstow Bldg., 735-737 Euclid Ave., where it remained until 1924. Vinson left the store in 1904; John J. Wood joined Korner in partnership in 1905 but left in 1912. Left with the store and its corporate name, Korner & Wood, Korner was considered the dean of local booksellers. Though modern and progressive, with the latest avant-garde works, the bookstore maintained a charming character and provided individual attention to its customers. Korner had photographs as well as books lining the walls of his 1512 Euclid Ave. store. Houdini and Blackstone visited the store. Sinclair Lewis stopped whenever he was in town, and Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycrafters, sold his volumes at Korner & Wood. Korner's son, Harrison K. Korner, took over the family business when his father retired, taking in Ernest F. Crummel as a partner. A small fire in 1959 and a $5,000 theft in 1962 dampened Korner's enthusiasm. He later announced that the downtown store would be closing because of a decline in sales. Following the closing of the downtown store in 1963, Korner still operated branches in Mayfield, Cedar-Fairmount, Cedar-Warrensville, Southland Plaza, and Kamm's Plaza until 1965.

After serving as an officer in the United States Navy during World War I, he devoted himself full-time to etching. He published his first original etchings in 1919. His initial subject was the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City near which he worked. Arms developed a successful career as a graphic artist in the 1920s and 1930s, specializing in series of etchings of Gothic churches and cathedrals in France and Italy. In addition to medieval subjects, Arms made a series of prints of American cities. He used sewing needles and magnifying glasses to get a fine level of detail. A member of many printmaking societies, Arms served as president of the Society of American Graphic Artists. An educator, Arms wrote the Handbook of Print Making and Print Makers (1934) and did numerous demonstrations and lectures. Arms was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member in 1930, and became a full member in 1933. "Sur la rivière (Marne)" - On the River Marne - Hand Colored Lithograph
Located in Soquel, CA
"Sur la rivière (Marne)" - On the River Marne - Hand Colored Lithograph Serene depiction of a house along the Marne River by unknown artist "Charlot." This piece was commissioned and printed by Camilla Lucas Publishing in New York. A two-story house with a red roof sits on the bank of the river. Lush trees line the banks, some of which are depicted with orange-brown leaves, indicating that autumn has arrived. The color in this piece was added by hand. Titled "Sur la riviere (Marne)" in the lower left corner. Signed "Charlot" in the lower right corner. Presented in a wood frame with a double mat. Frame size: 20"W x 16"W Image size: 11.5"H x 9"W In 1928, Hungarian-born Sidney Zoltan Lucas founded "Camilla Lucas Publishing" which encompassed a wholesale art publishing house and a retail art gallery. This business was both wholesale and retail and dealt in reproductions of antique, modern, and contemporary prints. It also sold original art including etchings, lithographs, and paintings. Starting in the 1930's and continuing into the 1950's, Sydney Lucas traveled to Europe periodically and contracted with French and Flemish artists to publish their work under the banner of the "Paris Etching Society." During his career, Sydney published many thousands of images. He brought art into the homes of people at all levels of income through his etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions. The various subjects included Redouté and Prevost Flowers, Barraband and Gould Birds, Piranesi, French Landscapes, Urban Scenes, Women, Children, Animals, Hunting and much more. Later on in the 1950s, Sydney and his wife Phyllis Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed, limited edition lithographs by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They worked directly with Mr. Dali over several years and the three created such fine images that in 1985 the Lucas’ Collection of limited edition lithographs from Salvador Dali’s paintings were displayed alongside his original paintings at the Salvador Dali Museum...
