About the Item

Beethovens Residence at Mödling - Vintage Colored Etching by Henry Goering WWII Hand colored etching of the Christof House (the Yard of Christ) by Henry Goering (German/American, 1871-1944). The viewer stands, looking to the front of the white colored house. A tall tree looms over the white fence in the back, while multicolored flowers grow along the fence. A composition of Beethoven Miss Solemnis appears on the lower left corner, "Modling Christof" center, and signed "H. Goering" lower right. Presented in a wood frame with a white linen mat. Frame: 22"H x 20"W Mat: 19"H x 17"W Image: 7.5"H x 7.5"W Beethoven came back in Mödling during the summer of 1820; he lived in a house called "Christhof" (The "Yard of the Christ") in Fischergasse ("Fisherman's street"), near the little river that runs through the village. When he was in Mödling, Beethoven went often to an inn called "Zu den zwei Raben" ("The two ravens") where a small orchestra played popular dances and received from Beethoven, as a present, the eleven dances known as Mödlinger Tänze. The house of the "Zu den zwei Raben" still exists nowadays, but it is no longer an inn, but private apartments. Henry Goering was born in Bremen, Germany in 1871 and moved to the United states around 1911 eventually settling in Tacoma, Washington. Goering was most notable for his hand colored etchings.

Born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Benson, a natural outdoorsman, grew up sailing, fishing, and hunting. From a young age, he was fascinated with drawing and birding – this keen interest continued throughout his life. His first art instruction was with Otto Grundman at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then in 1883 in Paris at the Academie Julian where he studied the rigorous ‘ecole des beaux arts’ approach to drawing and painting for two years. During the early 1880’s Seymour Haden visited Boston giving a series of lectures on etching. This introduction to the European etching...
