About the Item

Christof Mascher studied at the University of Art Braunschweig and graduated in 2009 as a Master Student of Walter Dahn. Like his famous teacher, he is focusing on figurative paintings, but was also active in the field of pottery and sculpture. Mascher creates paintings and works on paper that are often dedicated to landscapes, respectively to his very specific type of landscape. This is at least what we think when we first see them. However, these landscapes are also conceptual works. "Conceptual" in the sense of "self-referential", that is, that they – as images – reflect the idea of what kind of narrative is plausible, for a painter, to create (and with what techniques). Thus, also in the case of "Isometrics 1" (frame: 63.5 x 81.5 cm; sheet of paper: 54 x 72 cm), we see a land- or cityscape that gives us some figurative hints of where we are and what we see. However, the relation between the different elements that we see is rather loose, if not abstract. For instance, we see in the center background a castle and an alley leading towards it. Classic central perspective with trees becoming smaller and smaller according to their supposed distance. To the left and right of the alley we see fields and again trees that are absolutely unconnected to the alley. On the left side a contempary set of buildings is located on a whiteish plane that – again – is not related to the landscapes around it. The same is true for the small building in the lower half of the image: it is submerged with the colors in which the whole lower left corner is painted. Finally, also the church tower to the right is decontextualized. And: neither the buildings, nor the streets, nor the cars that drive on the streets form plausible spaces. They are put together as if different images of different situations had been photoshopped to form one enforced picture. The term "isometric" combines the Greek words "Isos" (equal) and "metria" (measuring) and that is exactly what is happening in this work (but also in many other pieces by Mascher): different entitites are rendered with the same measures – brought together – even though they do not have the same spatial logic. So, what seems to be an understandable and telling landscape turns in the end into a composition of colors. We are tricked by the illusion of something that we can read that – in the end – is un-readable, un-decipherable and un-explicable in the Renaissance-sense of the word.

His father owned sailing ships sailing to Indonesia and hearing the stories of the returning captains evoked in the young Nieuwenkamp an obsession for distant lands and adventure. After a failed attempt by his father to have his son make a career in his business, Nieuwenkamp attended the Academy for Decorative Art in Amsterdam. However, he left within one year to go his own way. He was an autodidact and a great experimenter with new techniques, particularly in the art of etching. Nieuwenkamp was a very focused man with the discipline of a scientist tempered by the sensitivity of an artist, a lust for adventure, a natural appreciation for ethnic arts and an enormous ambition to tread new paths. In 1898 he visited Indonesia for the first time and on his second visit in 1903-1904 he went on to Bali and became the first foreign artist to love Bali and the Balinese with a passion. Having secured agreements with several museums in the Netherlands to obtain Balinese art and objects for their collections, Nieuwenkamp immediately started to purchase and order a wide range of ethnographic art and objects from local artists and craftsmen.
