Ce paysage silencieux, dénué de toute présence humaine, présente des effets de lumière et des vibrations caractéristiques du faire "ouaté" d’Henri Le Sidaner, qu’il a décliné de manière très personnelle tout au long de son oeuvre. Selon le témoignage de son fils Rémy, l’artiste considérait qu’"aucun paysage ne devait être peint sans un effet de lumière qui le mette en valeur". Dans ce dessin, les zones laissées en réserve au sol et le long du muret pour retranscrire la lumière contrastent avec les ombres portées, indiquant qu’il a sans doute été exécuté en fin de journée, au moment où les contours des choses se brouillent, un moment que Camille Mauclair qualifiait d’ailleurs d’"heure Le Sidaner". La composition est identique à celle de la lithographie "La Balustrade", publiée en juillet 1911 dans la "Gazette des beaux-arts". Une peinture de 1911, intitulée "Jardin sur l’eau", en offre une variation à partir du motif de la balustrade en partie gauche*. * Cette huile sur toile est conservée au Boston Museum of Fine Arts et reproduite sur leur site internet
