About the Item

British, 1954, Manner of John Nash (1893-1977) Woodland scene with a body of water Watercolour and graphite on paper, mounted to card Signed indistinctly and dated lower left 34.1 x 50.3 cm.; (within frame) 49.1 x 65.6 cm. Provenance: Mallam’s, Cheltenham, 16 March 2022, Lot 184; Private Collection, United Kingdom; Within the cover of a seasonally thinned woodland, the still reflection of a pale pool of water separates the viewer from a grassy bank just beyond, swelling with the roots of a tree balancing at the water’s edge. An old iron fence twists downhill out of view, its rails wrought with age. Both enclosing the woodland and providing a visual entry point to the hillside beyond, the railings are bisected by a lopsided wooden gate, which introduces an ambiguous human absence to the scene. Experimenting with ideas of boundaries, the artist focuses the composition on the striking reflections of the water, a space of suspended reality that both absorbs and reveals with an almost mythological symbolism. The work is painted in the distinctive style of the preeminent landscape painter John Nash, with material and compositional similarities suggesting a keen awareness of Nash’s influence. Indeed, the symbolic human intervention in the landscape provided by the fence is a sensibility typical of Nash’s landscape painting, and reveals an intellectual appreciation for his approach. An absorbing perspective and opposition of vertical and horizontal forms says something of the artist’s proficiency. Their saturation of the watercolour with a deeper pigmentation than Nash himself favoured nevertheless indicates an independence of mind. The work is signed indistinctly in graphite to the lower left of the composition, in what appears to read ‘Joan Worthington’, and is dated to 1954.
