"Study from Nature Made in Montfaucon 1846" François Bonvin (1817-1888)
By François Bonvin
Located in SANTA FE, NM
Study from Nature Made in Montfaucon 1846 (Etude d'après Nature Faite à Montfaucon, 1846) François Bonvin (French, 1817-1887) Oil on canvas, original hand carved wood frame. Signed, dated and inscribed F. Bonvin 1846 a Montfaucon (ll); inscribed indistinctly Etude... F. Bonvin...montfaucon on the stretcher 6 3/8 x 8 5/8 (9 1/2 x 11 1/2 frame) inches Provenance: Ex Collection Auguste Péquégnot Paul Prouté André Watteau Charles Sadler Galerie Berès, Paris Exhibited: Paris, Galerie Beres, Francois Bonvin, Nov. 20, 1998 - Jan. 9, 1999 Literature: International Herald Tribune, Nov. 28-29, 1998, p. 9, illus. Bonvin's work has been compared with that of the eighteenth-century artist Chardin, whom Bonvin greatly admired, and from whose work he often borrowed particular motifs. Amongst the artists he personally encouraged were Théodule Ribot and Fantin-Latour. He was one of a group of artists who challenged the idea that still-life was a mode of artistic expression inferior to the lofty genre of history and religious painting. Bonvin championed the Realist conviction that everyday subject matter was the trues form of artistic expression. Bonvin was known for keen observation skills and great restraint. In his paintings, you can almost feel the moment between breaths as the subject matter is contemplated and then committed to canvas. This a superb, very personal and very quiet study of the village of Montfaucon on what appears to be an afternoon in the Argonne region in Northeastern France known its deep valleys and dense woodlands. François is one of the most interesting painters of the 19th century. Bonvin was born in humble circumstances in Paris and had a very difficult childhood. He was the son of a police officer and a seamstress; when he was four years old his mother died of tuberculosis. Young François was left in the care of an old woman who underfed him. Soon his father married another seamstress and brought the child back into the household. Nine additional children were born (one of whom was his half-brother, the painter Leon...

'Brume Sur La Seine (Mist On The Seine)' Raymond Thibesart (France, 1874-1968) Circa 1920s Pastel on Paper 12.6 x 9.5 (16 3/4 x 13 3/4 frame) inches Signed lower left Raymond Thibesart was born into an affluent family on May 2nd, 1874. As a small child, Thibesart’s family moved to a suburb of Paris where the very young artist found a wealth of teachers and inspiration to pull from. Thibesart showed such proclivity for drawing at an early age, and had enough talent that famed impressionist Emile Boggio began giving him lessons when he was just 11 years old. Eventually, Thibesart began formal training at the Lycee Rollin in Paris, followed by studies at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian. While working in Symbolism, Thibesart became a student of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art movements of his native France and began winning numerous medals in France, including the gold medal from the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1897. Thibesart then began his studies with the famed Impressionist Henri Martin for much of his early life. From Martin, he learned the technique of “plein air" painting who as a master of the discipline. Proficiency of this technique and its aesthetic, freed up the young artist, allowing him the ability to create amazingly beautiful light and shadow splayed across his trademark subjects which frequently included the landscapes of Italy...

Antique Horse "Heads, Hooves, Rump 1838" Wouterus Verschuur (Dutch, 1812-1874)
Located in SANTA FE, NM
Antique Horse Study "Heads, Hooves and Rump, 1838" Wouterus Verschuur (Dutch, 1812-1874) Pencil on paper Signed and Dated "W Verschuuur 1838" 10 x 6 1/2 (17 1/2 x 14 frame) inches In his time Wouterus Verschuur was an acclaimed and celebrated painter of horses. Through careful observation he learned to capture their physique and movement to perfection. As a true-born romanticist he was also interested in their character, thereby painting powerful carthorses in their stable, thoroughbred saddled horses during an afternoon ride or harnessed horses in action. He was born to an Amsterdam jeweler and received his training from the landscape and cattle painters Pieter Gerardus van Os and Cornelis Steffelaar. As part of this education Verschuur had to copy works by the 17th century painter Philips Wouwerman. Like Wouwerman, Verschuur's subjects consist mostly of stable scenes, landscapes with horses and coastal landscape. These works reflect the enduring influence of the northern Baroque masters on nineteenth century art, revealing the artist's close study of his Dutch and Flemish predecessors harking back to Peter Paul Rubens. Showing talent from a very early age, at 15 Verschuur had a painting exhibited at the "Exhibition of Living Masters" at Amsterdam in 1828. In 1832 and 1833 he won the gold medal at the annual exhibition at Felix Meritis. In 1833 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. In 1839 he joined the artists' society, Arti et Amicitiae. His reputation was also considerable abroad. He was often featured in the annual exhibitions which travelled the large European cities at that time. In 1855 Napoleon III purchased one of his paintings at the Exposition Universelle* in Paris. The Verschuur horse revels in its physicality, like a quintessential Baroque horse...
