About the Item

A fine 19th century watercolour study of the famous fish market inside the Portico of Octavia in Rome, Italy. The artist has beautifully captured the hustle and bustle of the scene, with various figures ranging from a catholic priest to a handsome dandy depicted in the market. The Porticus Octavia is an ancient structure in Rome, which many artists have attempted to capture. The structure was used as a fish market from the medieval period, and up to the end of 19th century. The study is painted on watermarked Creswick paper, a popular early 19th century paper made by Thomas Creswick. Creswick was appointed as manufacturer of paper and cards to William IV in 1831. Well presented in a late 19th century gilt effect frame with ornate corner molding and a washline mount. Unsigned. On watercolour paper.
