Located in New Orleans, LA
Sorry for the reflections on the glass, but I didn't want to take this lovely frame apart. The close-ups are much better. This is a highly accomplished, superbly detailed watercolor of a the facade of a building in Rome, depicting Corinthian columns, a frieze and a free-standing tributary sculpture above. Image area itself is 10.5" x 6.25", framed size is 19.5" x 14". Matted and presented in a pretty antique wood frame that has some flaws from an apparently long history but is perfectly serviceable, as you can see. Exquisite detail, so hard to accomplish with watercolor. Came from august Houston...

Dinas Cottage Killarney - Old Master Irish art landscape watercolour nocturne
By George Jones (b.1786)
Located in London, GB
An accomplished painting by the noted Irish Royal Academy artist George Jones. An expansive Irish landscape around Dinas Cottage Killarney painted circa 1820. The work is painted in the blue palette of a nocturne. Provenance. Agnew and Sons London Gallery label verso Ref Number 26802. Condition. Watercolour on paper, image size 7 inches by 5 inches approx. In excellent gallery condition. Housed in a complementary frame, 11 inches by 12 inches framed and in good condition. George Jones (1786-1869) was a British painter, and Keeper of the Royal Academy, most famous for his paintings of military subjects. Jones was the only son of John Jones, a mezzotint engraver. He became a student at the Royal Academy in 1801 at the early age of 15, exhibiting his first work depicting a biblical scene in 1803. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy over the next eight years. In the early part of his career most of his paintings were portraits and literary genre subjects but he became known as 'Waterloo Jones' after joining the army as a British officer in the Napoleonic Wars. He used his military experience to paint numerous highly successful depictions of 'The Battle of Waterloo' including 1820; Royal Military Hospital, Chelsea. Jones subsequently specialised in battle scenes but he nevertheless continued to produce biblical and topographical subjects as well as more frivolous literary and historical scenes. After the war he resumed his art career, winning prizes and fame for his paintings of military engagements. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1822, a full member in 1824, becoming its librarian, and from 1840 to 1850 its keeper. He was the friend of Charles Turner, engraver, and of J. M. W. Turner, whose most loyal executor he became, writing a short memoir of him and painting pictures recording his gallery. He died in Park Square, Regent's Park on 19 September...

View of the Ovo Castle in the Moonlight, a 19th century Neapolitan gouache
Located in PARIS, FR
Neapolitan gouaches appeared in the eighteenth century when tourism in the Naples area was developing: the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii made this city a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour, the journey made by wealthy Europeans to complete their education. Generally small in size for ease of transport and affordable in price, these gouaches were the ideal travel souvenir that these tourists of the early days were bringing back to capture the idyllic landscapes they had discovered during their journey and to share them with family and friends upon their return at home. The Bay of Naples and the eruptions of Vesuvius are the favourite themes of these views. Here we have a view of the Ovo Castle, which was rebuilt on the island of Partenope, in the middle of the Bay of Naples and about a hundred metres from the shore by the Normans in the 12th century on antique ruins...

Hasbrucken Wald Altenberg Germany - The Forest - Dutch 19thC wooded landscape
By Cornelius Springer
Located in London, GB
A stunning large drawing, signed and dated 1880, by Cornelius Springer. It is house behind glass in a fine frame. A huge heroic Ruisdael tree empowers this picture. Beneath it, workers chat and a horse and cart pass by in Gainsborough fashion. The scene depicted is the Hasbruchen Wald, or Beech forest, Altenburg in Germany. Signed lower left and right with title. Provenance. Bonhams London. Housed in a fine 19th century frame, 36 inches by 28 inches and in very good condition. Condition. Pencil on paper, image size 30 inches by 22 inches approx. and in excellent gallery condition. Cornelius Springer (1817-1891) was a Dutch 19th century landscape painter. He was a pupil of his father, the carpenter Willem Springer (1778-1857) and of Hendrik Gerrit ten Cate, Kasparus Karsen, and Jacobus van der Stok. He became a member of the Amsterdam painters collective Felix Meritis and won a gold medal for a painting of a church interior in 1847. He is known for watercolours, etchings and drawings, especially of city views and town scenes that he sketched while travelling around the country. He was awarded the Leopold order of Belgium in 1865, and in 1878 he was invited with Jozef Israëls to advise the Dutch Ministry of Public Affairs on the plans for the Rijksmuseum. His son Leonard Springer became a landscape architect.

VIEW OF AMALFI FROM THE GROTTA DEL CONVENTO DEI CAPPUCCINI
Located in London, GB
GIOACCHINO LA PIRA (fl.1839–1870) VIEW OF AMALFI FROM THE GROTTA DEL CONVENTO DEI CAPPUCCINI Titled & signed verso Gouache on paper 45 x 30 cm La Pira was an Italian painter, active almost exclusively in Naples in the mid-19th century. He painted solely in gouache, like many of his fellow Neapolitan artists who catered to the burgeoning tourist trade in Naples, though he is one of the comparatively select few who rose above the anonymous mass of such artists. Such was his renown in this genre, he was mentioned in John Murray’s hugely popular A Handbook for Travellers in Southern Italy (from the 6th ed., London, 1869). Like his peers, La Pira painted the more popular panoramas and genre scenes from Naples, Capri and along the Neapolitan coastline; however, it was his distinctive knack for dramatic lighting and freshness of atmosphere that distinguished him from his contemporaries, as the present work’s moonlight shows to powerful effect. Gioacchino, for whom there is very little in the way of documentary biographical evidence, is known to have been one of three artist-brothers. While we do not know his birth and death dates, no paintings...
