Promenade at Southport - British 19th century art coastal landscape watercolour

Circa 1842

About the Item

This charming 19th century watercolour painting is of the promenade at Southport. Painted circa 1842 the view is of the original Victoria baths on the left, built 1839, then Victoria Hotel, opened 1842, then Waterloo Terrace (still standing), then Claremont (former Brit legion building). The building jutting out at the far end was Whiteleys Promenade Lodge. The small pointed hut opposite the Hotel was a toll to access the Promenade and jetty. A lovely historical record of times past. The foreshore was purchased by Southport Corporation in 1885 and a marine lake and park (South Marine Gardens) opened, adjacent to the south-west of the pier, in 1887. A further lake and park (North Marine Gardens), adjacent to the north-east of the pier, were opened in 1892. The two sections of lake were afterwards joined and Marine Drive was formed in 1895. The Pier Pavilion was opened in 1902 and by 1909 a funfair had opened at the south-west end of the lake. Provenance. Newman gallery label verso with details. Condition. Watercolour on paper, 11 inches by 6 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary glazed frame with lined mount, 16 inches by 12 inches framed and in good condition.
