Johannes Martinus Vrolyk
Working Horses in a Landscape - Dutch Victorian animal art equine W/C painting

1875

About the Item

This lovely Victorian animal landscape watercolour painting is by Dutch artist Johannes Martinus Vrolyk or Vrolijk. Painted in 1875, the painting is of two working horses, one white one black in the foreground, having a mid-day rest from ploughing a field. Beyond them are trees in which a dwelling nestles. The composition is a pastoral scene in a restful green palette with light beautifully catching the white horse. A charming Victorian horse painting by a noted Dutch artist. Signed and dated 75 lower left. Provenance. Somerset estate. Condition. Watercolour on paper, 20 inches by 13 inches and in excellent condition. Frame. Housed in a beautiful period Empire frame, 28 inches by 21 inches and in good condition. Johannes Martinus 'Jan' Vrolijk (1845-1894) was a Dutch landscape and animal artist and a pupil of his brother J.A. Vrolijk. Throughout his life he focused on painting in watercolours and favoured meadow scenes with horses or cattle grazing. His paintings show strong affinity with the paintings of contemporary Willem Maris. Vrolijk lived and worked in The Hague and was a member of the well-known painters' society Pulchri Studio. Works by Vrolijk can be found in Amsterdam, the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Dresden and Munich.
