Signed lower right, 'W.M. Knowles for William Howard Knowles (American, 1909-1998), titled, 'Hong Kong' and painted circa 1965.
Born in San Francisco, William Knowles studied at the Masachussets Institute of Technology and, later, at UC Berkeley. He exhibited widely and with success and was a member of the Society of Western Artists, Bohemian Club and the American Institute of Architects, of which he directed the Northern California chapter (1945-1949). With partner Wayne Hertzka, he opened an architectural office in San Francisco in 1933. The team designed some of the most memorable buildings of that era including the Crown Zellerbach, Standard Oil, and PG&E buildings. William Knowles is listed in relevant art reference works, including Edan Hughes, 'Artist's in California, 1786-1940'.

William Howard Knowles
William Howard Knowles was born in San Francisco, CA on Aug. 21, 1909. Knowles graduated from MIT and UC Berkeley. With partner Wayne Hertzka, he opened an architectural office in San Francisco in 1933. The team produced some of the prominent buildings of that era including the Crown Zellerbach, Standard Oil, and PG&E buildings. In his leisure Knowles became a fine watercolorist, violinist, and winemaker. He died at his home in San Mateo, CA on Aug. 28, 1998. Member: AIA; SWA; Bohemian Club

Claire Weist (American, 1930-2014) was an artist known primarily for her watercolor compositions. She won several awards throughout her career, including the jury award for graphics from the Illinois Watercolor Society. Weist was originally from the Boston area and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and then Harvard. After spending time teaching art and as an illustrator, Weist moved to Crete, Illinois and opened her own studio, where she spent the remainder of her professional career.
