Raymond Bertrand
Sauvage and Les Âmes sœurs

1968

About the Item

Raymond Bertrand (born 1945) Sauvage and Les Âmes sœurs (2) Ink on paper, 19.5 x 14 cm and 26 x 15.5cm Signed Provenance: Private collection Raymond Bertrand, a contemporary French artist born in 1945, has developed over several decades a unique body of work imbued with mystery, eroticism, and dreamlike imagery. Trained in the tradition of academic drawing, he subverts this technical rigor to serve a personal universe where the human body becomes both the central subject and a vehicle for inner symbolism. His work, often rendered in ink, combines precise draftsmanship with formal freedom, allowing the imagination to flourish. In Les Âmes sœurs (Soulmates), two female figures merge into a single entity, their bodies gracefully overlapping in an ambiguous, almost choreographed pose. The piece evokes themes of duality and psychic twinship, creating a tension between sensuality and strangeness. Anatomical realism blends with a near-surrealist composition, showcasing Bertrand’s refined handling of both the body and emotion. Sauvage, on the other hand, conveys a completely different energy. Here, a young woman—half-human, half-vegetal—emerges from a burst of splattered ink. The treatment of the hair, rendered in expressive sprays and organic textures, emphasizes the fusion of the figure with nature, as if the being is dissolving into a fertile chaos. The intense gaze that pierces through the dark swirls lends the composition a mystical and emotional charge. These two complementary works illustrate a recurring duality in Bertrand’s art: between academic mastery and dreamlike abandon, between realistic figuration and poetic abstraction. In a language reminiscent of Bellmer or Fuchs, yet unmistakably his own, Raymond Bertrand offers a vision of femininity that is both captivating, unsettling, and profoundly human.

Italian School, late 16th century - Head of a Man and Écorché Studies of Arms
Located in Paris, Île-de-France
Italian School, late 16th century Head of a Man and Écorché Studies of Arms Red chalk on laid paper, 21 x 11 cm Provenance: Collection of Michael Jaffé CBE (1923–1997), English art historian and Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge Private collection, France This drawing, attributed to the Italian School of the late 16th century, demonstrates the influence of Michelangelo’s approach to anatomy and expression. The sheet combines two distinct studies: an anatomical rendering of arms in the écorché technique, focusing on the musculature and skeletal details, and a head of a man, drawn with careful attention to light and shadow. The use of red chalk lends the work warmth and immediacy, qualities often associated with Renaissance studies of the human form. The écorché studies reflect the Renaissance fascination with anatomy as both an artistic and scientific pursuit. The detailed depiction of the musculature suggests the artist’s interest in understanding the mechanics of the body, a practice heavily influenced by Michelangelo’s drawings...

Mid Century Modernist Seated Nude Figure Study
By George Giusti
Located in Soquel, CA
Abstract nude figurative drawing by George Giusti, (Italian 1908-1990). India ink on gesso patterned drawing paper created in 1949. Signed “George Giusti 1949” in the lower right corner. Presented in a distressed giltwood frame with glass and a light pink and grey mat. Image size: 15.75”H x 10”W This extraordinary artist was born in 1908 in Milan, Italy, of a Swiss father and an Italian mother. He studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and did graphic design there before deciding to move to Zürich, Switzerland, where he opened a design studio, which he operated for seven years. While on a visit to the United States in 1938, Giusti was induced to stay by the several excellent commissions that were offered to him, including the opportunity to collaborate with Herbert Matter on the design of the Swiss pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Giusti is well known in Europe and America for his architecture and sculpture, as well as his graphics. He studied architecture in Milan and worked at it from time to time, producing stunning examples of contemporary design. For more than four decades in America, and before that in Italy and Switzerland, George Giusti’s graphic designs have graced the covers of Time, Fortune, Holiday and other major magazines, as well as most of the publications of the United States Information Agency, and Giusti had a twelve-year design association with Geigy Pharmaceuticals. He has done advertising and graphic designs, illustrations, trademarks, client and employee publications, package designs for major corporations, and drawings. He has succeeded to the extent that his designs are consistently ahead of their time. It is Giusti’s expressed intention to build a bridge between fine art and art for commercial use. He disdains the terms “fine” and “commercial” as defining a distinction which should not exist. Art is art, he believes, whatever its purported use. Exhibitions: George Giusti’s work has been exhibited in America’s large cities and in most of the capitals of the world. His portfolio has been published in Graphis, Switzerland, Idea, Japan, Gebrauschsgraphik, Germany, Pagina Art, Italy, and Communication Art, and The United States. Awards and Affiliations: Over the years, Giusti has garnered more than ten gold and silver medals and eighty other awards and citations. He is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Alliance Graphique Internationale, International Center for Graphic Art (Typographic Art...
