About the Item

Todd Siler (American, b. 1953) Untitled, c. Late 20th Century Pen/ink on paper Framed: 32 3/4 x 24 in. Signed verso The following, submitted August 2005, is from the artist. The American artist Todd Siler stands astride two worldsart and scienceand he seeks out similarities of process across the traditional barriers of these two domains of knowledge. He refers to this integrative work as "artscience," as it fully melds various experiential approaches to creative inquiry and learning. The first visual artist ever to receive a doctorate in Interdisciplinary Studies in Psychology and Art from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Todd Silerexplores the relationships and deep connections in the sciences and the arts. He interrelates eons of evolutionary thoughts on the nature of the human mind, expressing a lifelong passion to understand and celebrate the creative process -- specifically, how wethink, create, discover, learn, invent, innovate, and communicate. In his one most recent body of artwork, Silerenvisions the nature "A.R.T. (All Representations of Thought), providing an alternative vision of time, space, matter, and energy beyond the fourth dimension that takes into account the edgy, violent side of our creative nature. Siler's multi-media installation, "A.R.T. Strings" consists of paintings on synthetic canvas ("Metaphorms") and freestanding steel sculptures ("Subliminal Stories") that depict a world of information we experience daily that is radically shaping the future of life as we know it. In describing the digitally compressed and distorted photographs in his sculptures, Todd Siler writes: "We compress and expand everything, as naturally as gravity distorts time and shapes space. These compressed expansions and expanded compressions affect everything under the sun: from our sense of truth to our experiences of beauty; from blissful joys to beastly horrors. Today we find ourselves staring at the edges of things, wondering about the subliminal stories our minds create to cope with our eternally turbulent universe, and potentially terrifying future. Are we, as physicists and string theorists relate, merely anonymous creations of invisible strings of matter too subtle to see? Does each nameless string contain a world of information that will forever elude the touch of human understanding? Does every string embody All Representations of Thought? Do A.R.T. Strings link everything from tranquility to terror? Perhaps life is only one pattern nature represents in infinite ways with all strings attached." Todd Siler founded Psi-Phi Communications, LLC in 1993, a Denver-based company that creates and develops innovative, multi-purpose learning tools for education and business, such as the Think Like a Genius Program for Lifelong Learning. He is the author of "Think like a Genius" (Bantam Books), "Breaking the Mind Barrier" (Simon and Schuster), as well as scientific concept articles including "Fractal Reactor: A New Geometry for Plasma Fusion" published in the Proceedings of the Third Symposium on Current Trends in International Fusion (NRC Research Press, Ottawa, Canada, 2003). Public collections of his work include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum in Moscow, and The Israel Museum in Jerusalem. He was a Forum Fellow at the 1999 and 2001 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and is a member of the International Advisory Board of the World Knowledge Forum in Seoul, Korea. Siler holds a number of patents on a wide range of inventions, including textile printing technology and a computer-graphics input device. • Ross Bleckner Group of 3 Figure Drawings (attrb.)
    By Ross Bleckner
    Located in Larchmont, NY
Attributed to Ross Bleckner (American, b. 1949) Group of 3 Double Sided Drawings Watercolor and graphite on paper Largest: 24 x 18 in. Smallest: 22 3/4 x 18 in. Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc. Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1 Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Bio sourced from the Archives of askArt. Howard Tangye (b.1948, Australia) has been an influential force in fashion for decades. Lecturing at London’s Central Saint Martins for 35 years, including 16 years as head of BA Womenswear. There, he tutored many contemporary greats, including John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Wes Gordon, Zac Posen and Hussein Chalayan. Examples of Tangye’s portraits are held in many important collections, both public and private, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Harvard University and London’s National Portrait Gallery. Throughout his teaching career Tangye quietly developed a particularly idiosyncratic art practice. By employing a decisive line with bold applications of richly layered materials, Tangye explores the nuances of the human form in an effort to expose his subjects’ true essence and energy. — Howard Tangye Craig (Richard's Friend - Sitting - Blue Jacket), 2012 Mixed media on grey...
