About the Item

Stamped verso for estate of Victor Di Gesu (American, 1914-1988) and painted circa 1955. A Post-Impressionist figural watercolor showing a young woman partially-clothed in evening wear and adopting a somewhat provocative stance. Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Los Angeles Art Center and the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris where he studied with Andre L’Hote and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. While in France, Di Gesu exhibited extensively, including at the Louvre, the Exposition des Artistes Étrangères, the Grand Palais of the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs. Moving to Spain, he attended Barcelona's Escuela de Bellas Artes before furthering his studies at Studio Hinna in Rome. On his return to California, he worked beside notable American Modernists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. Already a gifted colorist, Di Gesu combined his classical training with research into the developing scientific field of color theory, allowing him to paint with a consistently vivid, yet harmonious, color palette. His mature works, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, retain a verve and spontaneity that remains uniquely his own. A prolific artist, he was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and France. Back in California, Victor di Gesu continued to exhibit widely and with success, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, the San Francisco Art Association, the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

'Girl in Red', Guggenheim, LACMA, Rome, Academy of Fine Arts, Venice Biennale
By Carlo Maria Mariani
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
'Girl in Red' by Carlo Maria Mariani, 1959. Guggenheim, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Rome, Academy of Fine Arts, Venice Biennale ----- Signed upper right, 'C. Mariani' for Carlo Maria Mariani (Italian, 1931-2021) and dated 1959. Framed dimensions: 22.5 x 1.5 x 17.5 inches A native of Rome, Carlo Mariani first studied there at the Academy of Fine Arts where he was influenced by the prevailing styles of Hyper-Realism and Conceptualism. In 1994, he moved to New York City where he began to paint figural landscapes in a traditional, neo-classical style. The 1990s brought Mariani wide recognition and numerous honors, as he represented Italy three times at the Venice Biennale. Additionally, in 1998, he received the prestigious Antonio Feltrinelli Award for lifetime achievement in painting. Mariani continues to be best known for his refined and painterly, Renaissance technique. He was a central figure in Rome’s avant-garde in the 1970s and is widely regarded as an influential forerunner of 1980's Postmodernism. He achieved an international reputation, beginning in the early 1980s, for his arcane and, often, controversial paintings...

Reader, oversize drawing of young woman reading, minimal color
By Audrey Anastasi
Located in Brooklyn, NY
This work was intentionally torn and mended. It predates the artist's full immersion, years later into torn and re-pasted collages, using ripped previous drawings and paper-based materials from media. These recently discovered 1984 oversize drawings on archival papers were created working quickly, from a live model. The series shows the last existing observational drawings prior to the artist's switch to working with her non- dominant left hand. As a feminist, Anastasi's main focus is presenting other women. Unlike the often objectified male gaze...

Ross Bleckner Group of 3 Double Sided Figure Drawings (attrb.)
By Ross Bleckner
Located in New York, NY
Attributed to: Ross Bleckner (American, b. 1949) Group of 3 Double Sided Drawings Watercolor and graphite on paper Largest: 24 x 18 in. Smallest: 23 1/4 x 18 in. Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc. Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1 Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Bio sourced from the Archives of askArt.
