About the Item

A charmingly rustic watercolour showing two men resting from their work, having a conversation. This watercolour is in the manner of the Scottish genre scene painter, Erskine Nicol. The scene captures much of realism and honesty of daily life for the rural Victorian working class. The artist has inscribed with "Nichol" to the lower right and dated and signed their own initials ("C.W") to the lower left. The painting painting has been presented in a handsome late 19th Century frame with laurel leaf and berry strap work and egg and dart molding. The frame is finished with a card mount. On wove.

This, from a semi-autobiographical novel written by William Makepeace Thackeray, "Pendennis", in full "The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy." The novel was published in monthly installments from 1848 to 1850 and published in book form in two volumes in 1849–50.
