About the Item

A very fine early 19th century watercolour with ink detail. The artist has delicately captured a young girl returning from market. She can be seen relaxing on a small bank, as she clutches a small posy of flowers and her large basket. Her simple clothing and footwear suggest she is from the lower classes, possibly a maid. The forest setting and natural scenery add interest and depth to the composition, as the artist has visibly worked into his composition with layers of watercolour wash. Inscribed on the reverse in faint ink with the title and date, with what we assume to be the artist's name. Possibly transcribed from the original frame. The watercolour is well presented in a washline mount and gilt frame. On wove.
