A sanguine coloured watercolour, gouache and ink drawing of a stylised head with intricate floral and head motifs on the hand drawn mount. The work is initial signed bottom right 'AE' as yet unidentified. Presented in a fine custom red and gilt patinated wood frame under glass.
The head is reminiscent of the elongated portrait style of Amadeo Modigliani. This artwork showcases a captivating blend of portraiture and ornamental design. At its centre, a serene face, rendered in varying shades of sanguine, red and pink, exudes calm and introspection. The features are simplified yet expressive, evoking a sense of timelessness. Sanguine or red chalk is chalk of a reddish-brown colour. It has been popular for centuries for drawing (where white chalk only works on coloured paper). The word comes via French from the Italian sanguigna and originally from the Latin "sanguis".
Sanguine lends itself naturally to sketches, life drawings, and rustic scenes. The pigment used in sanguine sticks comes from red earths such as red ochre. Sanguines are also available in several other tones such as orange, tan, brown, beige.
