About the Item
Signed lower left, 'Elizabeth Greaf' (American, 20th Century) and dated 1990.
A complex study of reflected light and images by this Virginia artist and teacher who studied at the Art Academy of San Francisco and has exhibited widely and with success, including at the Williamsburg Art Gallery.
Statement of the artist:
"My paintings are representational and are frequently landscapes. I began studying oil painting at age seven. After getting degrees in hospital administration I was able to resume studying art as an adult in various art schools and workshops. In 1988, I left my former career to work full time as an artist and have done so continuously since that time. My studio is now located in Williamsburg, VA. Some of you are familiar with my former studios in either Long Island or the San Francisco Bay Area.
My paintings strive to capture the entrancing moment when one engages with a scene they must leave. I want to provide a vehicle for the view to linger in their minds and experiences. That is, I try to capture the essence of that moment as I interpret it in paint. These paintings are not to be photographic reminders but rather a use of my skills and technique to speak to the viewer of the setting. You may not have been there but the paintings should transport you to that special feeling found in the subject."
