About the Item

This stunning study of George Washington's hands is a unique and remarkable drawing pair. Mora was noted as an exceptional draftsman and actually traveled america giving lectures about drawing and sketching. He did this everyday but in the case of the hands this is likely to have been an illustration for a book or publication of some kind. If not, then perhaps he visited and sketched these in front of a sculpture. We believe this may have been done from the famous sculpture in Mount Vernon as the hands appear to be in a similar position to that sculpture . Many artist back at the time and further back in time made copious studies of famous peoples countenances, hands and poses. It has sometimes been felt that one can capture the character of the person through their hands as well. It is framed well in a period frame of gold leaf. The two studies were together in one of Mora's well renowned "sketchbooks". A marvelous gift to a gentleman, a great piece to hang in a study or grouping or for a lover of history! All around unique. Mora was a great figurative artist, and noted for depicting historical events, our ethnic diversity in America and many other genres! Signed and inscribed.
