About the Item

Late 18th Century botanical illustration of a rose by Henri-Joseph Redouté. The drawing is signed bottom left and is titled and annotated bottom right. Presented in a fine gold leaf frame with a gilt foil and watercolour painted card mount. A very charming ink on paper botanical drawing by one of the renowned Redouté brothers. His noted observational skills are very evident here in the way he has captured the details of the Rose Trémière. Redouté has fully annotated the drawing with description of the flowers colour and aspect. This drawing was produced at an exciting time in the development of Botany and at the zenith of the art of botanical illustration. A rare and exciting treasure for lovers of roses, botany and history. Henri-Joseph Redouté (25 May 1766 – 11 January 1852) was born in Saint-Hubert (Belgium), was a French draughtsman who was a member of the Commission des sciences et des arts during the Napoleonic Egyptian campaign (1798–1799). Born in the Belgian Ardennes, son of the painter Charles-Joseph Redouté, brother of the painter Antoine-Ferdinand Redouté and the famous Pierre-Joseph Redouté, he joined his brothers in Paris in 1785 where he was introduced to natural history drawing, then he was appointed painter of felines at the Museum of Natural History, while his brother is nominated for plants. In 1798, he was invited to join the Egyptian expeditionary force as a draughtsman: his talent earned him a contract to be a member of the Commission des sciences et des arts. He was therefore one of the 167 scientists, engineers, botanists and artists who accompanied Bonaparte in his campaign in Egypt. The naturalist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire made him his personal painter and allowed him to enter the Institut d'Égypte founded on August 22, 1798. "He left Paris on 23 April 1798, arrived in Alexandria on 6 July, and explored the Delta in August-September. On 22 August 1798, he was appointed a member of the Arts section of the Institut d'Égypte and reached Cairo on 22 September. He gave a single paper, on the painting of the fish of the Nile, on July 4, 1799. He was in one of the main expeditions: from 17 to 29 January 1799, he accompanied the expedition to the lakes of natron; from 26 August to 4 November, he was a member of one of the two commissions that explored Upper Egypt; on 15 December, he took part in the excursion to the pyramids of Gisa. In January 1801, he and many others tried to return to France aboard the brig L'Oiseau. In fact, he did not leave Egypt until after the capitulation of General Menou (2 September 1801). Returning to Paris on 8 January 1802, he resumed his place at the Museum and was one of the contributors to the Description de l'Égypte When the commission returned to France in 1801, its members set about the task of collecting and publishing the numerous documents (notes, sketches, drawings, etc.) produced in Egypt, often under extremely difficult conditions. The result of their work will give the Description de l'Égypte ou Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont été fait pendant l'expédition de l'armée française. Redouté, who worked on all the great sites of Upper Egypt, provided eleven plates and a hundred figures. He wrote a "Historical Journal of Observations and Researches during the Egyptian Expedition" which was never published. The account of his journey comes down to us only in fictionalized form. In 1822, at the same time as his brother Pierre-Joseph, he was admitted to the Free Society of Emulation (Liège). He died on 11 January 1852 at the age of 86.
