About the Item
A delicate and poetic floral study by Olle Hjortzberg, where the vivid red of the poppies contrasts beautifully with the soft whites and yellows of the daisies. With masterful lightness, Hjortzberg captures the gentle sway of wildflowers and the subtle scatter of meadow blossoms, evoking the fleeting charm of a Scandinavian summer.
Olle Hjortzberg (1872–1959) was one of Sweden’s foremost decorative painters of the early 20th century, particularly known for his monumental church murals. Educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, he spent several years abroad studying fresco painting in France, Italy, Greece, and Palestine. His work can be seen in major ecclesiastical buildings such as Klara Church, the Church of the Revelation in Saltsjöbaden, and Engelbrekt Church in Stockholm. Hjortzberg developed a distinctive style that blended classical tradition with a modern visual language, often infused with rich symbolism and inspiration from Assyrian and Byzantine art.
In addition to his religious and public commissions, he also worked as a graphic artist, designing stained glass windows, book illustrations, and even the official poster for the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm.
Hjortzberg is represented in several major Swedish museum collections, including the Nationalmuseum, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, and Moderna Museet.
