About the Item

This powerful circular portrait painting by Natasha Lelenco explores the themes of identity, estrangement, and displacement through a vivid figurative language. In this work from the Currencies series, the concept of identity is visually fragmented and symbolically layered, engaging with the sensation of not belonging and the emotional complexity of being perceived as “other.” Identity here is not only represented through the stylized facial features, but also through the symbolic inscription encircling the figure, anchoring the experience of estrangement in language and form. The piece’s exploration of identity resonates deeply with those navigating migration, cultural hybridity, and postcolonial legacies. Painted on a bold pink background, the right-facing portrait of a woman is rendered in a striking shade of green, with delicate decorative overlays evoking both cellular maps and ornamental scars. Surrounding the figure is an inscription in Spanish: "LO SIENTO. YO TAMPOCO SOY DE AQUÍ", which translates as “Sorry. I’m not from here either.” The directness of this message acts as both confession and solidarity, suggesting a shared experience of alienation and identity dislocation. About the Series: The Currencies series transforms the familiar format of a coin into a conceptual art object. Each piece in the series features a stylized portrait paired with a phrase or reflection that evokes questions of social belonging, migration, or cultural memory. The inscriptions, rendered in different languages, echo the internationalism of currency while challenging its role in assigning value to people and identities. Installation and Custom Projects: Each portrait coin can be displayed as a stand-alone artwork or composed into multi-piece wall panels. Casa das Peritas exclusively represents Natasha Lelenco and offers the possibility of commissioning bespoke installations, designed in collaboration with collectors, curators, or interior architects. Contact us to explore tailor-made formats and concepts. Conceptual Framework: The series plays with two core conceptual layers: Price Variation as Social Commentary: The slight difference in prices between the pieces points to the arbitrary assignment of value often based on race, gender, nationality or status, encouraging reflection on economic and social injustice. Art as Currency: Each piece functions as a symbolic currency that may be redeemed in the artist’s studio in Galicia for a new work of equivalent value at any future moment. This future-oriented promise creates a poetic loop of value, memory, and trust.
