About the Item

"Currency #195" is a striking circular wall sculpture by Moldovan-born artist Natasha Lelenco, part of her acclaimed Currencies series. Painted in luminous hues of blue on a treated pinewood disc, this unique artwork blends classical portraiture with a pop-surrealist twist: the gaze is doubled, as if two minds or identities coexist. Around the profile runs the phrase “Sei pazza! Sarà dura. In bocca al lupo. 1998”, Italian for “You’re crazy! It’ll be tough. Good luck.” —a mix of sarcasm, affection, and resilience often heard among migrants navigating new paths. This coin-shaped piece playfully questions the idea of fixed value and national identity. It belongs to Lelenco’s exploration of art as a symbolic currency, one shaped by experience, displacement, and emotional contradiction. With its compact format and bold expression, this sculpture is ideal for collectors of contemporary figurative art, poetic objects, or small-scale works with conceptual depth. About the Series The Currencies series by Natasha Lelenco invites reflection on value, authorship, and the narratives we attach to faces. Each piece functions as a fictional coin—uniquely painted, variably priced, and inscribed with enigmatic phrases that evoke otherness and ambiguity. These pieces can be installed solo or combined into modular wall compositions, tailored to the space. In Lelenco’s words: "This series is about value and price... The norm is that the faces on currencies belong to kings, presidents, or national figures. These, by contrast, depict anonymous faces surrounded by phrases that reflect a community of those who don’t quite belong." Installation and Conceptual Flexibility Ready to hang. May be displayed individually or in custom arrangements with other coins from the series. Discounts and combined shipping are available for multiple purchases. Custom commissions are welcome.
