"Eden's Rave" by Rafael Melendez is a captivating hybrid artwork that combines drawings, painting, and sculpture to create a visually stimulating and thought-provoking composition. The artwork features a long row of disordered centipede-style repeating legs, reminiscent of Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase," which infuse the piece with dynamic movement. Populating the group are giant mouths with wagging tongues, flying arms with hands holding eyes, and grey phallic "elephant trunks" symbolically spewing bodily fluids, all amidst an entanglement of leafy vines. The bespoke oak wood frame adds an additional layer of artistic commentary. Designed to mock the wooden supports used by Basquiat in his paintings in the early eighties, it combines the Basquiat aesthetic with a hyper-stylized interpretation in the vein of Donald Judd.
