About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Mario Cespedes' (Bolivian-American, born 1942) and created circa 1985. Matted dimensions: 24 H x 18 W x .25 D inches. Born in Bolivia, Mario Cespedes immigrated to Sao Paolo, Brazil at the age of 14. A self-taught artist, Cespedes acquired his early knowledge of art by visiting museums and learning from other artisans in the city’s public markets as a teenager. Much of his work was inspired by the Andes and Amazon River in South America and frequently comments on pollution and deforestation. Mario Cespedes is a member of the Paris International Association of Plastic Arts, partnered with UNESCO, and has exhibited widely and with success throughout South and North America including at the San Bernardino County Museum (1980), the Brazilian National Biennial (1974) as well as in Germany (1992) and France (1970, 1977). A monumental and historically distinguished work by this groundbreaking Peruvian Modernist who drew inspiration from Peruvian indigenous and pre-colonial culture. The paintings of Emilio Rodríguez Larraín are held in the permanent collections of museums worldwide including the Musée de la Ville de Paris, Peru's Museo de Arte de Lima and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This painting was selected by the Peruvian Government for exhibition at the XXXII Venice Biennale in 1964 and is the largest single recorded work by the artist. Emilio Rodríguez Larraín received his Bachelors of Architecture in 1949 from Peru's Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería and held his first solo exhibition in Lima after visiting Europe in 1950.
