About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Douglas McClellan', dated 1988 and titled lower left, 'Cretan View'; additionally signed, titled, dated and media noted as 'monotype with collage' on verso. A founding member of the art department at the University of California, Santa Cruz and professor emeritus of art, Douglas McClellan was one of the pioneering figures at UCSC. McClellan's work has been exhibited widely including at the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. His work may be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Pasadena Art Museum among others. McClellan attended Pasadena City College and the Los Angeles Art Center, served in the Pacific Theater of World War 11 as a camofleur, and after the War enrolled at the Colorado Springs Art Institute where he met his wife, artist Marjorie Ness. McClellan obtained his master of fine arts at Claremont Graduate School. Prior to teaching at UCSC, McClellan chaired the art department at Scripps College, one of the Claremont Colleges, and the Claremont Graduate School M.F.A. program as well as taught as associate professor at Chaffey College in Ontario. McClellan was a member of the California Watercolor Society and the Los Angeles Art Association.
