About the Item

Watercolor, gouache and collage painting by the famous Dominican artist, Ramon Oviedo. A early figurative work by the artist of two figures in a city setting. Signed lower right and dated 1969. Condition is excellent. The bottom one inch of the painting is a separate piece of paper attached to the larger sheet. The frame is a one inch wide black painted wood frame. Overall framed size 19.5 by 15.5 inches. Provenance: Galería Auffant. After Jaime Colsón, Darío Suro, and Ada Balcácer, the late Ramón Oviedo is undoubtedly the leading figure of Dominican painting to emerge in the 1960s. In 1975, the painter was invited by Gómez Sicre to have a solo exhibition at OAS headquarters. The works for the show were created as a response to the title of Paul Gauguin’s landmark painting Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? The French painter created a symbolist work depicting people of color in a tropical climate, but his optic was that of a colonialist European fleeing the horrors of modernity. Oviedo deconstructs Gauguin’s pictorial utopia through paintings such as Eco Estéril where the forms are more three-dimensional and the pictorial surface is agitated. A bluish gray-green color defines the figures, while in shocking contrast the background is an intense cadmium red. The lower right of the painting contains a closeup of what can be either an old man or woman, eyes closed and teeth clenched. This figure seems to be falling sideways. In the middle ground a nude woman sits with arms and legs crossed. She stares outwardly. Vaguely visible in the upper background, the back of a nude female is discernible. These human forms are floating against the red background. The faces are mestizo, reflecting the hybridity of Caribbean people. This is no warm climate paradise, but a place of dislocation, anxiety, tension. There is an existential charge to the compositions of these years (1974-1979), where meaning is pursued through the painted figures that are searching for meaning, either through convulsive gestures or still indifference. The title references a sound that does not reverberate. Ramón Oviedo was born in Barahona, Dominican Republic. At the age of 13 he apprenticed under Manuel Pelegrín, who ran a print shop. Oviedo’s only formal training in anything close to art was at an American cartography school in the Panama Canal Zone in the mid-1950s. Back home in the Dominican Republic, he worked at the Instituto Cartografíco Dominicano and by 1959 he began earning a living as an art director in some of the most prestigious ad agencies on the island such as Reprex. In 1965 he left this work and focused completely on painting. During the revolution of April 1965, Oviedo and many other Dominican artists supported the restoration of intellectual Juan Bosch to the presidency. He lent his artistic talent with the production of banners, posters, and caricatures criticizing the U.S. invasion of the island and demanding the return to power of the Partido Dominicano Revolucionario (PDR). Oviedo had his first solo exhibition in 1966 at the Galería de Arte Andrés. Through his gestural and socially charged expressionism, he began to dismantle the neo-classical influence of Jaime Colson, as well as of the populist muralism of Vela Zanetti. In 1974 Oviedo was awarded the Grand Prize at the Bienal de Arte de Santo Domingo by a jury consisting of the curator José Gómez Sicre and painter Darío Suro (1917-1997) among others. The following year Gómez Sicre invited Oviedo to exhibit at the art gallery in the OAS in Washington, D.C. In the early 1980s, while struggling with cancer, Oviedo continued to work intensely. Beyond his easel paintings, he completed murals at the OAS (1982) and the Museo de Historia Natural in Santo Domingo (1986). His last exhibition was in 2014 at the Centro Cultural Mirador in Santo Domingo. Oviedo died in 2015 at his home studio in Santo Domingo.

These new small-scale paintings were created using gouache on handmade paper. Alexandra Rutsch Brock then “drew” with a sewing machine using various colored threads. Using the thread as a painted line, playing with the marks and motifs the machine allows that creates contrast in both surface and color. They are sewn directly with no preliminary sketches, just instinctive gesture, sometimes in a similar color to enhance a texture, other times contrasting as a new element. The entangled threads that dangle down emphasize the materiality. Working so closely to the surface, she is aware of the senses of seeing, breathing, touching and feeling……………escaping into these new surfaces. Alexandra Rutsch Brock has exhibited in solo and group shows most recently at The Keck School at USC, CA, The Painting Center, NY, Village West Gallery, NJ and Misericordia University, PA.
