About the Item

Andy Warhol Banana Cover Art c.1968: The Velvet Underground & Nico: the ultra rare, highly sought-after, 1960s pressing uniquely featuring a near-fully unpeeled banana. Accompanied by its original record in very good overall vintage condition. A holy-grail Warhol collectible that also makes for exceptional 1960s Andy Warhol wall art. A fine, very well-preserved example; difficult to find as such. Medium: Off Set Lithograph on vinyl record sleeve. Dimensions: 12 x 12 inches (30.48 x 30.48 cm). Cover: very good overall vintage condition as pictured; very minor shelf wear and markings commensurate with age & medium. Record: Very good overall vintage condition. Plays nicely. Printed signature from an edition of unknown. Catalog Raisonne: Paul Marechal: Andy Warhol: The Complete Commissioned Record Covers (Prestel). Further Background & History: Warhol became the Velvet Underground’s manager in 1966 after seeing them perform in Greenwich Village and then brought German born singer Nico to the table. Warhol designed the cover as a self standing artwork and this is marked by Warhol’s very noticeable printed hand signature. In dissociating the concept of the artwork from the band itself & achieving wide distribution, Warhol created something revolutionary in nature. Says, Warhol scholar Paul Marechal, “After sublimating an everyday object, he then reintroduced it into daily life through a vehicle accessible to all, the record. Perhaps Warhol wanted to be as well-known as Coca-Cola.” The original album cover allowed fans to peel back the banana skin as a sticker, revealing the fruit of a nude-colored banana underneath. The sexually-charged effect was challenging for manufacturers to first pull off (the time it took to perfect the peel was partly the reason the album’s original release was delayed), but MGM deemed it necessary, since Warhol’s visual presence opened unprecedented doors. Historical info: The actor Eric Emerson who was projected behind the group during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable, filed a lawsuit against the record label for non-payment regarding the use of his image (seen upside down on a non-sticker version). Between March/April 1967, the album was quickly withdrawn from record shops. After a few months, the album was redistributed with a large sticker that covered the top of the photo in question. Notes: There are three versions of the back cover of the original American release: 1st - Features an image of actor Eric Emerson projected upside-down on the wall behind the band. Often referred to as the “Torso Cover”. 2nd - The actor's image is covered by a large black sticker. 3rd - As presented here, the actor's image is airbrushed out. _ Please find additional works along these lines from Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring & Roy Lichtenstein now live on our 1stDibs gallery

This deck is new in its original packaging. A brilliant piece that makes for vibrant one of a kind wall-art that hangs with ease. Medium: Offset print on Maple Wood. Dimensions: 8.0 x 31 inches (20.5 x 79 cm) Excellent Overall Condition. Murakami trademark inscribed on verso. Unsigned from a sold out edition of unknown. Published in conjunction with Kaikai Kiki Gallery Perhaps Murakami's most iconic motif, these candy-colored, smiling flowers came into the artist's work when he was preparing for his entrance exams for the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, and he embraced the form over nine years teaching prep-school students to draw flowers. One of the most acclaimed artists to emerge from postwar Asia, Takashi Murakami—“the Warhol of Japan”—is known for his contemporary Pop synthesis of fine art and popular culture, particularly his use of a boldly graphic and colorful anime and manga cartoon style. _ Pairs quite nicely with many of our other Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst & Roy Lichtenstein items on our page.
