Pop Art Prints and Multiples

POP ART STYLE

Perhaps one of the most influential contemporary art movements, Pop art emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.

ORIGINS OF POP ART

CHARACTERISTICS OF POP ART

  • Bold imagery
  • Bright, vivid colors
  • Straightforward concepts
  • Engagement with popular culture
  • Incorporation of everyday objects from advertisements, cartoons, comic books and other popular mass media

POP ARTISTS TO KNOW

ORIGINAL POP ART ON 1STDIBS

The Pop art movement started in the United Kingdom as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period’s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.

Richard Hamilton’s 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style.

Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and making statements about current events. Other key characteristics of Pop art include appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture; use of different media and formats; repetition in imagery and iconography; incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media; hard edges; and ironic and witty treatment of subject matter.

Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture.

Roy Lichtenstein was another prominent Pop artist that was active in the United States. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. Recontextualizing a lowbrow image by importing it into a fine-art context was a trademark of his style. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami further blurred the line between art and popular culture.

Pop art rose to prominence largely through the work of a handful of men creating works that were unemotional and distanced — in other words, stereotypically masculine. However, there were many important female Pop artists, such as Rosalyn Drexler, whose significant contributions to the movement are recognized today. Best known for her work as a playwright and novelist, Drexler also created paintings and collages embodying Pop art themes and stylistic features.

KAWS Holiday Companion set (KAWS plush holiday complete set of 3)
By KAWS
Located in NEW YORK, NY
KAWS Plush Holiday Companion Set of 3: These 20" figurines were published to commemorate the debut of KAWS’ floating art piece in Hong Kong during Hong Kong Art Basel 2019. Each new with tags. A classic, limited standout KAWS Companion series. New and accompanied by original packaging. Medium: Plush (soft) figurines. Set of 3. Year: 2019. Dimensions: 20 inches tall (applies to each individual). Each new in original packaging, with tags; excellent condition. Accompanied by original collector’s box (excellent condition). From a sold out edition of 2000. Includes a edition numbered card (see last image). Brian Donnelly, better known as KAWS, spent the first year of his career as an animator for Disney. After leaving in the late 1990s, KAWS took inspiration from the company’s signature cartoon, Mickey Mouse, to create his own set of characters that he named “Companions.” With gloved hands and X’s for eyes, “Companions” first appeared in KAWS’s graffiti works across New York City in the late 1990s. By the end of the decade, the street artist created his first three-dimensional version, and his characters have since taken on a variety of colors, sizes, and poses. In 2017, his four-foot-tall Seated Companion (2011) broke the auction record for the series, selling for over $400,000. However, many of KAWS’s “Companions” are considerably more affordable, such as his vinyl toys...

Ice Cream Desserts (A) Claes Oldenburg dessert parfait etching in rainbow pastel
Located in New York, NY
The painterly, multicolored effect of this pastel ice cream still life is achieved by printing “à la poupée”, in which multiple colors can be applied to the plate for printing at one time. Oldenburg first printed in brown, and for the second plate, freely applied yellow, green, purple, blue, and light purple, producing an array of loosely sketched pastel confections. Image 13.5 x 21.15 in. / 34.3 x 53.7 cm Paper 22.5 x 31.25 in. / 57 x 79.4 cm Soft-ground etching and aquatint in six colors “à la poupée” on cream, thick, slightly textured Arches paper. Signed by the artist with initials lower center in pencil, dated 1976 lower right in pencil, and annotated AP VIII/XII lower left in pencil. Ice cream is a subject Claes Oldenburg has returned to again and again: from monumental sculptures of ice cream cones, to plaster parfaits, to countless drawings and designs. On his soft sculptures, Oldenburg wrote: "Reversing the expectations of hard sculpture, these huge collapsing objects rely on gravity and chance for their final form." The drooping edges of his soft sculptures connect to the unpredictably melting surface of ice cream, which he has explored viscerally through his dripped plaster ice cream sculptures...

10 Statues of Liberty, Paris
Located in New York, NY
Andy Warhol 10 Statues of Liberty, Paris, 1986 Offset Lithograph 38 3/4 × 27 inches Edition of 500 Published by: Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris Unframed This oversized vintage Warhol exhibition poster was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Andy Warhol: 10 Statues of Liberty" at Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, Paris, 8 April - 30 May, 1986. The print was published in an edition of fewer than 500, and is considered especially collectible as it was a lifetime edition for an exhibition that Warhol attended. It was printed in 1986, the year before Warhol died. Warhol's renditions of the Statue of Liberty have been the inspiration in both subject matter and style of many subsequent generations of Pop artists, including Peter Max's ubiquitous Statues of Liberty.
