About the Item

Autograph Letter Signed by Arturo Martini to Gaetano Chiurazzi Milan, December 16th 1935 XII. One page, single-sided. In Italian. Excellent condition, with minor aging signs. This is a greeting letter by the Italian artist Arturo Martini ( treviso, 1889 - Milan, 1947) to the Italian gallerist, Gaetano Chiurazzi (Naples,1899- Rome,1967) of the popular "Chiurazzi Showcase" Gallery, in Via del Babbuino. Both share the same passion for statue and bronzes: in this case they are seeking an agreement on merger, techical details of expenses and quotes. The background: In 1933 Arturo Martini settled in Milan, here he holds a solo show at the Gallery of Modern Art, and experiments new techniques and materials such as wood, stone, clay and bronze, participating in major national exhibitions. He creates monumental sculptures: the giant plaster of Moses saved from the waters, six meters high, exhibited at the Milan Triennale in 1933; La sete (1934), in stone, memory of the casts of Pompeii; the bronze of Athena (1935), five meters high; The dead of Bligny would startle (1936), inspired by Mussolini's speech against economic sanctions after the occupation of Ethiopia in 1935; The Lion of Judah (1936), dedicated to the victory over Ethiopia; Corporate Justice, destined for the Palazzo di Giustizia in Milan; The Sforza Group (1938-39), work destined for the Niguarda Ca 'Granda Hospital in Milan. Gaetano Chiurazzi (Naples, 1899-1967) Better known as Tanino, in 1925 he was sent to Rome by his father to manage the family foundry, as well as to take care of the exhibition hall in via del Babuino. His interest shifted from bronzes to painting. The result was a change in the character of the art gallery, which began to exhibit towards the end of the 1930s, alongside the classical bronzes, paintings by painters of the Roman school, until after the Second World War it became a painting gallery and thus becoming one of the best known in Rome as the "Chiurazzi Showcase". Chiurazzi here welcomed numerous exhibitions by contemporary artists, such as Maccari, De Pisis, Mafai, Raphael, D. Cooper, Levi, Cagli, Morandi, Carrà, Soffici, De Chirico, Sironi, Rosai. A great connoisseur of art, especially lover of figurative art, around the 1950s he also opened his gallery to abstract works of art by G. Dorazio, A. Perilli, G. Turcato, C. Accardi, T. Scialoia . It also welcomed works by foreign painters including S. Dalì, J. Ensor, M. Ernst, C. Pernieke, E. L. Kircimer. His activity, his knowledge in the artistic field, his personality together with his character led C. to befriend contemporary painters, especially with De Pisis, but also with exponents of the literary world including in particular G. Comisso , G. Ungaretti, A. Palazzeschi, L. De Libero.

Autograph Letter by Filippo de Pisis - 1934
By Filippo De Pisis
Located in Roma, IT
Autograph Letter Signed by de Pisis - "Love and Flowers" to Gaetano Chiurazzi. Venice, February 10th 1934. In Italian. With stamps and postmarks. Very good condition, with minor aging signs. Original envelope included. Perfectly readable, on ivory color paper and on letterhead "et spiritualis unctio". With autograph notes signed in blue ink at the end of the back, by an undefined author. An affectionate greeting letter written with a rapid calligraphy and in a cryptical way, with quotations understandable only within the friendship relationship between the poet-artist of "Loves and Flowers" and the Italian gallerist, Gaetano Chiurazzi (Naples,1899 - Rome,1967), best-known as "Tanino". De Pisis is today best-known for his cityscapes, metaphysically-inspired maritime scenes, and still lifes, especially those depicting flowers. His work has a particularly airy quality, and is laden with a sort of pathetic pleasure. This letter demonstrates how de Pisis spent his life: between Rome, Paris and Venice, living a very extravagant lifestyle; he had a pet parrot named Coco, and in Venice he was one of a handful of residents at the time who used a gondola. He had two personal gondoliers on 24 hour duty, who wore black-and-gold livery. Filippo de Pisis (born Luigi Filippo Tibertelli, Ferrara 1896 – Brugherio 1956) When he was 20 years old, the young painter from Ferrara had a meeting that changed his life. During his military service, he met the "Dioscuri", the brothers De Chirico and then Carrà. He was sure impressed by their way of seeing painting and, at the beginning, shared the metaphysical style. After a short stay in Rome and Paris, at the beginning of the 1920's, he started to rework his style, made of suggestions and original subjects, where the pictorial line is fragmented and, therefore, defined by Eugenio Montale as "fly-paw painting". The friendship with Julius Evola...
