Ernst Barlach (1870- 1938), a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. His participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his artworks protesting against the war. Barlach trained under French artists and produced Art Nouveau-style sculpture and works on paper, but at first unable to find success. This led to a trip to Russia where the artist began creating figurative sculptures inspired by early Gothic art, carving spiritual and emotional themes from hard-woods and bronze casts. Barlach's fame increased after the war, he received many awards and became a member of the prestigious Preußische Akademie der Künste ( Prussian Art Academy) in 1919. Small abstract paper collage in chalkboard black by Bay Area artist Michael Pauker (American, b. 1957). This piece is created from a few pieces of antique paper, assembled in an aesthetically pleasing ratio, with a stark contrast between codex marks on a black background. These are all numbered sequentially, into the thousands - Pauker created a series of these pieces over the course of a decade.

Bay Area artist and art educator Michael Pauker was born in New York in 1957 and knew he wanted to be an artist from the age of 15. He earned a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at SUNY Purchase in his native state of New York. In 1989 he went on to earn an M.F.A at Mills College in Oakland and was awarded the City of Oakland Artist Fellowship in Painting. He has been a Bay Area resident since 1988. His work has been exhibited widely across the U.S., as well as in Japan and Costa Rica, and is included in the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

The Italian painter Carlo Quaglia discovered his passions when he was an official in Libya, in the thirties, in Benghazi, Sirte and Derna. At the beginning of the Second World War, in 1940, he was taken prisoner by the British and transferred to India at Camp 27 of Yol on the slopes of the Himalayas. He spent five years of imprisonment devoting himself to the study of the arts, practicing the first painting tests that will lead him to take the decision to become a painter. Upon returning to Italy he took his leave and began his career as an artist. His was a short and successful career that led him to critical and public success. Suggesting theatrical mood, theatrical staging, stage, costume ideas and stage colors, intellectual references (Orson Welles and Rex Whistler), the Italian dramaturg asks the collaboration of the yung and talented costume designer, Maria De Matteis.
Under the supervision of Luchino Visconti, Gerardo Guerrieri signs the direction of Vita col padre, by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse (premiered on January 28, 1947, Teatro Eliseo, Rome). These letters refers to all preparations and adaptations for the theater, from the stage to the costumes.
